Early this week we got some sad news regarding Millie our 10yr old lab. She's got a large mass on her spleen that is most likely cancerous and the ultrasound showed another spot on her liver that might be as well. The option for surgery is there but the odds are not good even with removing the spleen. We are choosing not to do the surgery and started her on some herbs that might help slow anymore growth and will also make her a little more comfortable. The vet said it could be a few weeks or maybe a few months but her time is running out. Until then, we're giving her all the love she deserves and plenty of extra treats. I'm still trying to figure out how to tell the kids. Especially my boy, she's been his special buddy since he was born.

it is hard enough as an adult going through losing a pet. I hope he doesn't take it too badly.

I'm so sorry. Hard floors are an asset, the tumor on the spleen can put pressure on her bladder and your sweet girl might not be able to control it after waking up from sleeping. Good luck with your son, doggies go to heaven too.

So sorry for the diagnoses. I had a lab mix that didn't have a spleen for the last 3 years of his life. It was softball sized when they removed it. But, no other organs were involved and at the time the biggest risk was the anesthesia because of his age. The removal seemed to make him prone to colic, which he had never suffered from prior, so that was an unforeseen consequence.

I know it was a tough decision on how to proceed and I can't imagine how difficult it is to inform your children of Millie's prognosis.

That’s rough, We went through the same deal with a lab and our kids 2 years ago. Not fun times. He got visibly sick we were honest with the kids told them he was slick and the doctors couldn’t help him.

haven’t thought about that in a while. Still pretty raw. Hope for the best for Millie and your family.

My thoughts are with you and your family. Just went through a similar situation with our “Millie” in February and it’s still rough.

Every year, for each dog's birthday. My wife loves making the pups birthday cakes.

Yes, I remember that from a few years back. :handshake:At this house, someone sings Happy Birthday to them.1

My great Uncle joined (or got drafted ?) for WWI. Before he left for the army, he bought a steak for his dog, cooked it up and let him eat it. He told people that he knew no one would ever treat his dog the way he would want him to be treated and that he was most likely not returning home.

He was correct. KIA on 26 SEP 18 battle of Meuse-Argonne France. :usa:

I can tell you that a cake for each dog birthday, singing them Happy birthday, getting them Christmas presents as well as personalized stockings with treats in them, giving them an Easter basket, and an Easter egg hunt with dog treats in the plastic eggs, that they don't reciprocate the same way as we do, but they are bring us joy every day. Sometimes when we really need it.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. It's still sinking in that she's not going to be with us much longer but we're still praying for as much time as possible. Gonna tell the kids here in a bit. Lord give me the strength to keep it together.

JD Guy I remember reading about your millie and I'm so sorry.

Horkn Hayden looks like he's enjoying his birthday and his new buddy is too! Hayden is a good looking yellow.
