Buzzards have returned early this year.

Soo Locks open 3/25 and there is already a ship waiting to go through.

    Yooper jokes continue.

Interesting...never thought about buzzards leaving an area or migrating.

Our buzzards are back here in Iowa too. I suppose in the winter most of their foods would be frozen.

Hawks and owls around here for raptors. No vultures.

About an hour west and they can be found.

Maybe they are like some people in that they prefer warmer air. However, more than likely it is because they need warm air for lift. Those big wings no doubt tire them quickly as you rarely see them use their wings except for gliding.

There never used to be vultures around here but the last ten to 20 years there have been some on/near interstate 195 often in the median or circling above it. Last Summer I saw my first turkey vulture. The only other place I saw a turkey vulture was in Longview, Texas.
Supposedly they eat ( besides road kill) small mammals/rodents and some grasses. The grasses would be dormant around here and many small mammals either hibernate for short/long periods of time.
