hello...been checkin out the site for a while but finally decided to register...found my way over from another site. figured id post some pics of a rebuild on an 041fb a guy brought me. he's a firewood horder so i figure it would be fitting. he bought this thing new in 1976 but ran it over with his tractor and wrecked the case...so he bought a donor and asked if id rebuild it....sho nuff. the donor was in great shape just had a locked up big end bearing so both saws were split and scavenged for whatever good parts there were....

here it is all laid after i put the good crank from his saw into the donor case with new bearings and seals...you can see the fresh gasket sticking out of the top of the case...
    IMG_0820.jpg

he got a nos piston and cylinder off ebay...his p/c had some scoring as well as the donors so i said if were dong it lets do it right so he came up with this
    IMG_0821.jpg

    piston/cylinder installed on case
    IMG_0828.jpg

intake tract installed after pressure/vac test. i found his original fuel tank had some corrosion forming so that got chitcaned...i split the donors fuel tank apart for inspection, here it is going back together with a new gasket. his original saw had the fairbanks/morse recoil, the donors was the new pawl system, i like that better anyways so it worked out good.

setting the timing...you can see my el cheapo sheet metal degree wheel on the other side to find tdc..points are open here
    IMG_0860.jpg

and here she is all buttoned back up with a 16" bar...ran pretty damm good.

Welcome to the site, Big T! I have a special place for the 041.....I've had literally over a dozen of them and still run my vintage 041AV Super almost every other day.....I still have 2 of those as well as enough parts saws to build several more....

Nice job on your rebuild, that saw will last for years to come....they don't build them like that anymore....

Thanks for the welcome! I've ran a few 041's but never really wanted one until after this rebuild. Now I've got my eye out...a super would be great!

Nice rebuild T, appreciate the pics and descriptions along the way. You sure have come to the right place for saw chat, this place is loaded with them.
Are you a regular saw repairman or just do it as a side hobby kind of thing?

Awesome rebuild thread, my 041 still runs like a top.
NOS parts are getting harder to find - I need to get an oil pump seal for mine.

thanks!! it was...I ran about a tank thru it before I gave it back to get the bearings somewhat broke in. it cut very well...I ran it next to an 039 I was fixing for my neighbor, although it was running a 20" bar I was more impressed with the 041..
thanks!!! its more of a hobby...im a marginally adequate parts guy by day...but ive got a few saws torn down in my basement, ill post up some more rebuild threads here...nice forum
the guy I rebuild this thing for left me with the box of old parts so i have a few good pieces left...on the actual oil pump there is an o-ring 9646 945 0340 and theres also a seal in the worm gear 9643 003 1160...both of those are still available. you gotta watch taking the seal out of the worm gear because its held in with a little ring that is unavailable so don't damage that...
thanks rottiman!! theres a lot of good smiley face guys here hahaha

Welcome! I've always had a soft spot for the 041 myself. I have a Super that's been awaiting a complete rebuild for over a year now, it just hasn't trickled to the top of the priority list...

It took awhile, but I managed to rustle up new OEM parts for a COMPLETE refurb. I have all the gaskets, bearings, seals, carb kit, fuel lines, misc. soft bits, and even a NOS piston kit. I never did the final tally, but I'm certain I've stuck far more into that box of parts than the saw will be worth when it finally gets the necessary attention. But, this particular project isn't going anywhere, it's going to stay on the 'personal saw' list.

I digress . . . I'm a pretty new member here myself, but I've been around long enough to know this is a great site. Much better than the alternatives if you ask me!
