I built up the sides and front of my dump trailer. Now the rear view mirror is useless while pulling the trailer. I was thinking of cutting a window in the wood and putting hardware cloth over it so I can see through it at least when empty. Good or bad idea?

Piece of a hog panel...something heavier than hardware cloth.

I hear ya. I can back up anything, and grew up in a trucking/farming family, but I do like to see what is directly behind me when driving down the road.
Automotive mirrors suck. They let you either see behind you(sort of) or what is next to you. I set my side mirrors up properly so I don't have any blind spots, but that means if the rearview is blocked, my center rear is not visible. I like to see if someone is behind me.

    cut the hole.

Side mirrors still leave a blind spot directly behind you. And sometimes I like to check the load while moving

A wireless reversing camera mounted on the back of the trailer.

If it has enough range to get a signal to your truck cab? And if it can be switched to full time viewing, not just when reverse gear is selected?

This is just an example. Many more models are available.

I've learned to not use my rear view in trucks. Because most of the time something is blocking it.
Good side mirrors angled just right to see your load works well. May need up to upgrade to larger and longer (tow mirror)
