Two years ago I partially tore my rotator cuff and at the same time had a torn knee meniscus. Both thankfully healed on their own and I'm back to full bore wood hoarding. For the past two years have been driving by standing dead oaks beside the road on my way to the cabin on state forest lands. Lot of firewood cutters in the area so I was shocked they were never cut. Got a fuelwood permit and dropped several right across the road last week. Easy pickings, but they are still very wet=heavy, and there is a little punk around edges on some. Still good stuff. But, will have to admit the biggest (18") rounds are about the limit for this 70 year old to handle, lift and throw into the truck! Now got some splitting to do, which I still do without hydraulics.
I too had a partial rotator tear and meniscus tear. Surgery on the meniscus which I don’t recommend. It was not easy, painless, trouble free, or cheap, but it worked. The shoulder I could deal with by learning what not to do. After having shoulder pain for what felt like a decade it is finally feeling better. It sucks not being able to do the things we enjoy. Nice score and glad you’re doing better.
Welcome back to full hoarding! Those are some good BTUs in that load! I often forget to pause and be thankful for my own good health (when it is good) and my family’s…thank you for the reminder.
I know what you mean. I was close to getting surgery on my shoulder but held off as it seemed to be getting better, and now is 99% good. Orthopedic doc said some do heal on their on, but only about in 15% of the cases, so I am lucky. Thanks for the well wishes.
Nice load of wood. I have had 2 knee scopes on one knee and 1 scope on the other over the years. Thankfully nothing on the back or shoulders thanks to a good chiro that has kept me away from the knife on my upper and lower back a few times. The worst part for me on the knees was not the surgeries because they went well. I could not stand sleeping with the pain in the legs although a pillow between my knees did help some.
What if you quit moving big rounds and split them by hand on site? My maul and new x27 stay with me when I go wooding. I could move big rounds, but I've put my back out enough times that I'll avoid it now. No more hauling of rounds here (nevermind the mess of splitting at home), everything split at the score pretty much. You must be made of steel. Or kevlar. SCA
I do keep a monster and regular 8 pd maul in the truck, if rounds are a little too much. And fortunately don't have back problems (yet). Not made of steel or kevlar...but wish I was!
If you are doing that when you are 70 you are doing pretty good. The wood looks pretty solid to me and not a bad haul. Good for you.
Some nice Goldilocks wood there. My back likes that size. Glad to see you're all healed up and hoarding again.
Good on you getting that oak JDU. Worry not about that outside punk. Wood looks good. Also good to keep going at 70. I am now struggling at 80.
