Took down a couple today. Nice sunny day with no wind. Gypsy moth killed a few years back. Bark and sapwood shot but heartwood solid. Same location of my Red Maple, Always the Staple thread. Had help. He pulled all the rounds and staged for splitting. Well over a cord for the two. Went and got the hydro. Prior stack is the same from Fall cutting. Filled 3/4 of a half cord rack. Those racks are about 5'x10' inside dimensions. I'll separate out heartwood splits for another stack. Many more there to take down should i feel ambitious.
White oak Outstanding work Brad. I see plenty of splitting in your future. I’m hoping to cut a little more GMC killed white oak tomorrow myself.
Hydro was cranking through it. The tops seemed dry enough to burn. The few bigger logs i split were noticeably wetter. You going to cut near work tomorrow? Same place as last time?
Was a perfect Winter day. Just cold enough to work in a sweatshirt and not get sweaty. Havent had too many this Winter. It hit the low 70's in parts of CT on Thursday.
Close to where I cut last weekend. Right on Aircraft Road tomorrow. Last year the state cut back the tree line from the road and pushed a lot of the logs into the woods. I spotted a couple piles this past week and some logs looked like white oak at a glance. If they’re red oak I won’t bother seeing as how I have plenty of that next door still. Fingers crossed.
One of my favorites. Despite being long dead the pile of rounds was still fragrant. I admit to sniffing a few splits and rounds!
Mine too. I get a vanilla-ish whiskey barrel smell. I love red oak too. When splitting SBH, it was not a pleasant smell therefore I never tried cooking/smoking with it. Apple is amazing fresh split too.
I'm always amazed at the longevity of dead white (and red) oak. I had one come down across one of my trails this past fall. Looked completely shot on the outside like old driftwood on the beach... or worse. It was dead so long that the root system had completely rotted out and it just went over stump and all. I was just going to cut it to get it off the trail but under the sapwood, it looked like a live tree that got dropped last week... but was ready to burn in a month...
What did you think it smelled like? People say vanilla but I rarely get that. To me it seems like a mix of 80% bourbon and 20% red oak most of the time.
I've had the pleasure of felling WO here. Some of the messiest, flaking bark I've dealt with. 4yr+ CSS'd, bark still attached. Lots of bark flakes. They burn fine, though. And that smell. Mmmm

Love some white oak, one of my favorites. The splits come out so nice. What's your guess on the moisture content?

I was really surprised to see the hollow on the first tree. Even some ants too. Rare to see that in any oak around here.
Thanks. Ive been liking that method more as i plunge cut the diagonal cut first. The notch was too far in on the first one. Second tree had a sideways lean and had to get it right otherwise it would've clobbered his shed and the stack. Both felled pretty close to my target. Ill admit i was nervous on the second one. 500 felled the second, 400 the first. 261 & 400 tag teamed the bucking duties. Dead white oak is some hard stuff.
