Does a Hydro Need to be Level When in Use?

I mostly use the hydraulic splitter on level ground, but on occasion its not level. Where ill be using it next the hydro is tilted. Is this bad for the machine? IMG_2689.JPG

I'm not so sure id worry too much about the hydro part and more about engine oiling. I'm not familiar with the oiling systems on those engines. I assume they're just a "splash" style. Hopefully someone who knows better will chime in.

As long as you don't cavitate the pump or keep the engine from lubrication you should be fine. It just depends on the slope. I think it would be almost impossible to harm the machine if it's level enough to work.

I know mine leaks out of the vents on the fill cap on the tank if its not level. Boy did that make a mess. DOH!!

I’ve had the low oil switch kill the machine for being too much out of level.
Cavitation is a good point, as well as bent vent hole leaking.
I added a wheeled trailer jack so I can adjust level from hitch to splitter foot, and manually shim whichever tire needs to come up for level across the width.

Takes a good amount of lean to get tank oil to spill on mine. I've ran it off kilter several times with zero issues. Nothing extreme though.

I'd be more concerned about engine lubrication than the hydro part. These little splitters are most all splash lube.
I think 12hp engines is the line where they start to become pumped?

As long as the oil levels are full then there is no reason that it needs to be dead level...PITA to operate if its to far out of level anyways.
If it spews oil out the hydraulic vent, just turn the splitter so that the vent is on the uphill side (and make sure you don't overfill it)

As level as it can be , if not the first issue is oil shooting out the tank vent.
Low oil sensor could also be an issue if it is really tilted.

If not level put a couple pieces of 2x4 or whatever it needs under the low side tire and level it off.

If the ground is level enough to work on comfortably, it's fine. I ran mine on a gentle slope a few times with no harm done. It's electric now, and my hydraulic tank will not spill unless it is tipped at least 45°, maybe more.

Put something like this under the low side.

This is what I think. The engine can take a fair amount of angle of operation. The hydraulics probably even more so. The biggest issue would be wood sliding off the splitter if it's that uneven ground.

A piece of scrap 4x4 with thinner lumber screwed on each end to keep the wheel from rolling off works well. We've got a couple to raise the super low Didier splitter up a bit.

I extended my vent so I could operate and tow it at a slight angle w/o puking hydraulic fluid all over.

Yep, I use a couple deck boards that I drive one wheel of the splitter onto to help level things out.
