Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster. Recent haul from the local yard waste dump and I cannot tell if this is ash or Norway maple? Splits easily and had a decent amount of sap oozing from the cut ends along with larger growth rings. There were a couple spots on the bark that looked like EAB damage. Are there maple beetles that leave similar damage?
Thanks everyone for the replies! The dark heart wood was throwing me off. I'll probably go back for more this morning. I try not to overload the truck, but its hard when the dump is only 2 miles from the house.
Just wanted to say thanks again to everyone that helped determine this was Ash. Ended up going back to the dump 2 more times this morning to load up. Should be sitting pretty good now for 2024. Splits much easier than the elm I scrounged last month!
Yup, I agree, ash...just picked up a load myself yesterday. It was "goldilocks" wood...a single EAB killed pole newly down and from ~12" down to about 6" diameter...perfect! Your truck is the twin to my old bosses truck, which is actually the Mazda labeled version of the Ranger, right?
Awesome news! You can't beat that. The only thing better would be a trailer behind that ranger full of more of dat fat ash!
Good eye! 1998 Mazda B4000. It's seen better days but for weekend projects it's perfect. I agree on the trailer!
I didn't even look closely, otherwise I'd have seen that is was the mazda twin. . They had the best bed style, faux flare side. I also just noticed your name. Where are you at on this lovely state? You might be pretty close to where I am based on the snow you have. Any more and you'd have to be around Madison or further up north. I'm in ozaukee cty. I've processed a lot of ash as of late. I've seen a few that are dark in the center like this as well.
Hi Horkin, not too far. I’m in the fox valley area. Taking advantage of this warm weather the last couple days while I can!
Looks like ash to me. Ive been fooled by Norway maple looking like ash in the past. Look for "D" shaped borer holes in the bark which are classic EAB points of entry. Welcome to the FHC Wisco Glad you decided to join the insanity!
Welcome to the site, Wisco . This site is the encyclopedia of firewood. I am on the opposite side of the state, by La Crosse.
I see I got fooled by the Mazda too. Of course they are favorite makers of mine as well. Wife is on her 5th Mazda now.
