Dropped five chains off with Delbert at RK. He got them done sooner than promised, and I picked them up at the service desk. Five bucks a chain! haven’t tried one yet , but Delbert seemed to be capable.

I am sure at this rate, RK isn’t trying to profit, but it ensures a customer visits twice, and is likely buying stuff since they are there. Good business practice that I am confident someone at the home HQ in a suit will mess up one day.

I don’t leave Rural King without at least a peanut roll 75 cents. Two for 1.50 if you a bargain shopping

I used to bring my chains to a hardware store that was awesome all the employees knew where anything was and were very helpful. Fast forward a few years and employee turnover, I went in to pick up some chains, there was some confusion and a bag with my chains was brought out. I looked in the bag and could clearly see the chains had not been touched by a grinder. The owner was checking me out and I asked if they had been sharpened. He said yep. A few days later I bought myself a grinder…

If they tried it would go from new to 2" long in one sharpening, and look burnt!

I hand sharpen until I feel it’s time to take them in and hit a grinder . I’m fortunate that a few miles from me is Michigan Saw and Tool . They sharpen anything from router bits to circular saw blades and do a heck of a good job at a reasonable cost , 20” $6. I also take all maple tapping 5/16” drill bits , which are a specialty bit, for sharpening every year . Things are wicked sharp and drill real nice clean holes .

They're definitely not making money at that price. I'm at $10/chain as a minimum. Grind and then file the rakers. It takes time to do it right. Time is something I value because I cannot get it back. $5-6 to sit at the grinder just isn't worth it to me. I'd rather be doing something fun or more productive. I sharpen my own chains and chains for a few friends, because we live in the boonies. Sharpening my own is the most efficient thing to do.

I did that when I started and figured I'd take my chains to a local dealer to have them professionally gone over.
They all came back burnt and were not even ready when they told me to come back.
Won't trust just anyone again with my chains. I'll just do it myself

Every time I've taken chains to be ground, they come back junk. The last time was to an amish shop that services a lot of wood cutters, how could I go wrong? 6 bucks a piece on a 20 or 30 thousand dollar machine? I use 'em for fence rows.

I watched the guy at the local hardware store grinding one, the sparks were just flying. No thanks.

I took 13 varying length chains to the local Stihl dealer cause I like the owner and wanted to patronize his shop. Chains were returned sharp, but with a steeper angle than what the witness mark on the teeth is. I normally do all my own hand filing. This was the pile that got put aside 'to deal with later', and never did. First one I tried seemed to cut decent but chip size was smaller than what my hand filing produces. Can't say anything about speed really...normal I guess. Teeth didn't look burnt and no signs of bluing. IIRC the correct method is "tap tap tap" not just "taaaaaaaaaaaaaap" on a grinding machine. Think TheChainsawGuy on yootoob taught me that.

These were the first chains I'd had sharpened in probably 10 years.

I sharpen a lot of chains on a grinder and you definitely need to have s light touch so you don’t blue the teeth. Pink or tan abrasive wheels are more prone to this and need to be reshaped as they are used. My grinder has a cbn wheel for 3/8” standard chains now and I use the regular stones for .325 and 3/8”

On a Franzen? That's a big investment to have an inexperienced operator running.

Insider Tip: It's almost NEVER the intermediate to senior technicians that are assigned chain duty at a shop. It's usually someone new, likely inexperienced, and while that in and of itself isn't a hopeless situation, combined with a lack of supervision and a service that really doesn't generate a ton of revenue.....

Most occasional users don't know better and just buy a new chain on occasion when they have a job to do. That's far more profitable than a $10 grind. Pro users and users that do know better, either have and know how to use a file, or have one of the many mechanical systems to maintain their own chains. And they still buy new chain fairly often.

I don't know what kind of grinder it is, but I do know it's automatic. Somebody sets it and forgets it. It must be a Ronco. Really, though, it's automatic. They do enough that it's a two week wait on chains.
