I hate when parts stores give you the wrong parts....

Yep. Use scraps. I made mine with scrap 2x4 cutoffs, a scrap of plywood, and 5/4 deck board scraps.

Drum brakes really suck to work on.

    Especially on frigid February days.

I wonder are big truck drums easier? Or worse?

We had a 1 ton Chevy square body. The rear drums brakes were ungodly expensive and a massive pita to deal with. Those were the biggest drums I've dealt with. If you meant BIG truck stuff, I have no clue.

Yeah that's what i meant, like air brakes. Me either.

But let's put it this way, it sounds like a petty thing to turn down a vehicle for, but I really hope my next car has all discs.

My thorny afternoon. Untangling the branches wasn't too bad. Hauling them to the back 40 by hand sucked. Picking up as many as the small branches to minimize the thorns is even worst.

Mine didn't last week either! Then tried the old Blaze, nope. Poor kid had to walk in a whiteout with subzero temps and stinker does not like to bring jacket to school. Thank God for good neighbors! I told her to go knock on the door but that neighbor was already outside calling for her. :handshake:

Drums cost me $140 a corner, shoes are $75 a set. The hardware kit is included.

the brakes themselves aren’t bad. Having brake chambers fail, especially the emergency brakes due to their spring in the canister are the most dangerous parts.

when the air lines fail, they create their own world of pain. Generally having corroded fittings that require replacement of the components they are attached to.

I haven’t worked on the disk brakes yet.

They can't wait to go again! We missed last season but were able to borrow my brother in laws camper for one annual trip we just couldn't miss. We're excited to get back out there and make more memories.

    Looking at maintenance records,

the last time I did drive brakes it cost me $884 for 4 drums and sets of shoes.

took me about 3 hours to swap them all out and just as much time to run the cores back to the parts hour.

So 12-hours of my time just for parts install and running.

it would have been $425 per axle to let a shop do the job. Including labor and parts.

so at $125/hour that’s $1500 plus $884 to do it myself or $950 to let someone else do it and I go fishing or chase momma around the house…

OMG - that is the funniest typo I've ever made. Actually, I'm going to blame that on a typo, and my bad eyesight not recognizing which suggested correction I should pick (or maybe it was plain inattention).

bogieb the reason you did not get a correction suggestion is the wrong word you used was spelled correctly. I guess things like that that happen to us are the test to make sure we are not a bot. Thanks for the laughs:handshake::thumbs::thumbs:

Seems the neighbor is bitching to my landlord instead of talking to me about the wood piles.

time to go move to the camper and start building a house…
