Last report was -46.2 ambient temp, -109 windchill, and sustained winds of 99 mph. Second coldest place in the world right now (by 2 degrees) behind Hall Beach, Canada.

And I don't claim to fully understand this, but apparently the weather conditions mean the observatory will actually be in the stratosphere for a brief time tonight.

I find this interesting because this is going on only 12 miles from me at the Mount Washington Observatory (New Hampshire) and their weather has a significant impact on conditions at my home. As of 8:16 PM (EST), they smashed the record for the lowest recorded windchill in NH (-103 in 2004) and they are close to the record low ambient temperature for the state (-50 back in 1855). This also sets the national record for coldest recorded windchill in the U.S.

Records show that prior to today, there are only three other times in U.S. records that the wind chill on the currently used scale appears to have hit -100°F. On January 16, 2004, New Hampshire’s Mount Washington Observatory, recorded a temperature of -41.8 degrees and a wind of 87.4 mph, leading to a wind chill of -102.6°F.

An automated weather station at Howard Pass, Alaska, recorded a temperature of -47.5°F with sustained winds of 53.7 mph at 10 p.m. on February 21, 2013. The resulting wind chill would have been minus -99.8°F. However, the winds were measured at a height of 10 feet, rather than the standard 33 feet, so the actual wind chill was more likely minus -105°F, according to Brettschneider.

Looking beyond such remote outposts, the lowest wind chill confirmed at a U.S. town or city (adjusting for the currently used wind chill scale) is -100°F at McGrath, Alaska, at 6 am AKST on January 27, 1989. The air temperature was -72°F at the time, and the wind speed was 7 mph.

Oh, I think Yellowstone and Livingston MT would be on that list somewhere.

I’m always amazed at weather on Mount Washington. Last I read, it had recorded the highest wind gust ever recorded on earth at 232 mph

They possibly have, but as I mentioned above, these are recorded data points. I'm sure there have been countless lower windchill factors in the U.S., they just haven't been officially recorded.

Current condition in my area. It’s going down to-25 and gusting to 50. Pretty steady gusts all day. Haven’t seen this since 1987 around here we get the cold but not usually with this much wind E8145660-0DB9-4742-8984-4B1B08118846.png

The rockpile seems to generate it's own weather.

My wife and I were staying at the Mt Washington Resort, at Bretton Woods. A birthday observation in September, a few years ago.

It was thick overcast, while in North Conway, ~15miles away, it was clear and sunny. It was like that for the entire long weekend we were there.

231-mph in 1934 and that record held up until a 253-mph gust was recorded in Australia in 1996 during a cyclone.

I am 20 minutes NW of the base of Mt Washington here. Pine species are cracking and/ or snapping in half with the winds, the temp is currently -23°F with a WC nearing -40°

The chickens must be chilled out in the coop tonight!

It's warm inside, but I'm leaving the cabinets under the sinks open along with a trickle of water jic!

    Actually they have been recorded.

I don’t think they’ve played or concerned themselves with windshield temps though.

    This is Montana

all I’m doing is sharing temps and records I’m aware of. I’m not sorry they conflict with what you’re sharing. You’re just killing the messenger is all. Saying the NOAA records aren’t official though…
