I currently use a 460 to do the majority of my cutting . For some reason it seems MUCH heavier than it did when I bought it new about 10 years ago or so ! My trim saw was handed down to me after my father past . Husky 335xpt , top handle . It’s a really nice saw in the Sugarbush when I’m trimming smaller limbs that have fell on the lines . What would be a good in between saw ? My thoughts are a Stihl 261 and have it ported .
I should have mentioned I’m in Mid Michigan and still cutting lots of dead ash along with mostly oak and hickory . I don’t think porting the husky would make sense either . Weight wise the 261 is much lighter than the 460.
Stopped at the Stihl dealer today . 261 $679 with a 16” bar , $10 more for the 18” and another $10 for the 20” . It’s a very nice light saw compared to my 460 . He tried to sell me the 500 that he just got in . The 261 comes with that dang safety chain and he won’t let me swap for a yellow label. Cannot buy just the power head either . Ugh !
is it a law they can't swap chains? because I'd ask him if he is really willing to lose a sale over a chain swap.. If you're not hung up on buying from a dealer, here you go Brand new STIHL MS 261 C-M and all accesories - tools - by owner -...
Time for a new dealer then. That’s ridiculous. Might be worth it to make a trip into the Lansing area and let Superior saw set you up with the 261 trimmed out the way you want it! have huskihl port it for you. He loves 261s long time
You won't exactly get a lot a people telling you not to buy a saw around here. You can't go wrong with a 261 or 550XP!
I hardly look at craigslist anymore . Seems like it harder to find anything with all the commercial stuff on there . However , that looks like a good deal . Hmmmm….. The dealer looked on the stihl order website to see if he could order one the way I want . Nope . Definitely gonna have it ported , hoping it will be more of the main saw and just use the 460 for the big stuff that I occasionally get .
He’s in Mason , going that way in a couple days to pick up some maple supplies on Okemos Rd just north . I’ll tell him you sent me !
Jeff is the guy you want to talk to there. He doesn’t really dicker though. Just tell him you don’t want any of that sissy safety chain and he’ll set you up. Buy the 6 pack of Stihl oil to extend your warranty and plan to use it for fire starter. Then pick up some Amsoil Dominator, echo Red Armor, or heck even Walmart super tech is better oil. Good luck and remember we like p.s. best get cracking saps been running for 6 weeks now.
No sap here yet , Feb 14 is the earliest I’ve ever tapped . I know the big producers out east will start in December but that’s because they have to . 100,000 plus taps takes a bit of work !
It is terrible these days, everyone uses fb marketplace from my understanding, but I have facebook blacklisted. So craigslist it is for me, I just put a search in for that saw and it happened to show in the results. I was really looking for another dealer closer to you.
I know , craigslist used to be very good but the way those commercial guys use all of those tags is just ridiculous. FB marketplace seems to work much better . I don’t do a lot on either but sometimes you can sell stuff pretty easy or find some good deals . The guy with the 261 responded . He bought it new in 2021 and never used it . I see the saw with the 18” bar was $609 back then .
