Yea, the cow manure smell is a huge tip off. Lol

Gotta love tree guys that don't have a clue what they're doing.

I've always thought it strange that folks say oak smells like cow manure. I milked cows for many years and that, of course meant cleaning barns of manure. I never thought manure smelled like oak nor the other way around.

I always thought Hickory smelled more like a barnyard than red oak. I kind of like the smell of oak

I've had red oak that almost smelt like cat pizz. Lots of red oak had a very strong smell, but can't quite put my finger on a comparable smell. Not sure if the strong ones are all the same type of oak. I've been around quite a bit of cow poo as well, and agree with you that I don't see the connection.

The only reason I associate oak and cows at all is that dad always bought the sawdust (bedding) from a mill that apparently sawed a bunch of oak...so the barn always had that oaky smell.
Now I have cut into some oaks that must have had some rot starting and they had a certain twang...not really manure or pizz smell though.

They're not exact by any means but they tickle my nose similarly. Inside the barns and out usually smell different. I'm not talking about digging in the chit. More of the driving by smell. Then again we work at one cattle farm that smells nothing like what I'm talking about. Their farm smells more "sweet". Lol. Maybe your nose is broken or mine.

I love the smell of oak when I walk past the woodshed. Now Cottonwood, that smells like manure!

I always thought red oak smelled like a horse. Not excrement, but the animal
