My local dealer finally has a nice stock of saws . I currently have a farm Boss 290. I’m in need of a larger 20”-28” class saw . I’m having a hard time deciding between a ms 462c-m and a 500i. I like the both of them there very sweet saws . The fuel injection scares me a bit also to the m tronic as well . I hear good things about them . This fall we purchased a LT-15 woodmizer . So I’m in need of having something reliable due to trying to monetize the woodmizer . Trying to add a little more farm income than row crops . Mostly hardwoods oaks cherrys and a crap pile of hemlocks . I like that both saws are almost feel equally, I never ran any of them . What’s everyone’s thoughts ?

    thanks in advance

I’d say grab onto them and see how they feel on you.

May local stihl dealer has a 462 setup with both a lightweight bar (physical weight not quality) and a standard saw bar. There is definitely a balance difference.

    I like the feel of both them . Particularly 500i . I’m looking for more mechanical/ electronics . Reliability . I have heard some 500i horror story’s

Seems like the 500i has a good track record.

Might want to look at the 400c as well.

I've ran them both. Very strong saws.

I’ve had a 462 with the 24” light bar for several years and I love it. Next to my 261 it’s my most frequently used saw. I’d say it’s the best new saw Stihl makes. Light, powerful, sounds amazing and trouble free. It makes my 661 feel like a dud.
The 500i is growing on me. It’s light and easy to start. Good looking saw, but they are expensive.

7BA10E56-92C6-4049-88C6-8DEC74378079.png Fwiw I recently read about fueling issues with the 500i. Buxton work saws brought the issue to light.

If the goal is to put the saw to work feeding the LT-15, for profit, then it will need to be maintained as such. A conversation with the dealer on how they prioritize commercial units/customers, meaning machines that must run to put food on the table, can save a lot of regret and heartache down the line. Especially with equipment that may have systems you cannot/do not want to maintain yourself. Doesn't matter if it's a weed-wacker, or a million-dollar excavator. There is no machine that runs day-in and day-out without some kind of support/maintenance.

I'd lean towards the 500i, for heavy use, as long as you are confident in the dealer's ability to support it should an issue arise.

The 462 you were looking at may or may not have been mtronic. They’re available both ways but the mtron models are scarce in the last year due to wiring harness shortages. The electronics on both the 462c and 500 aren’t what I’d call “failure prone”, but there are certain instances

Could also find a leftover or slightly used 461 and have one of the simplest and most bulletproof designs ever

Just shopped around again today kicking them both . They both feel amazing . 500 is a bit bigger body maybe .5lb heavier . Thanks for bringing the possible mechanical issues to light . That helps . But I don’t think either one might be prone to never having issues

If I didn’t have a 462 I would be on that like white on rice

A huskihl recommend is worth $250 extra over an unknown IMO

Don’t know that it’s worth any extra, but thank you. I have done business with the fella before and he has many saws and is just updating his collection
