    Nice!! Whereabouts in NW WI?

My dream stove for years had been a Jotul 118.

Gordon area. I almost pulled the trigger on a 118 a few years ago but opted for a 602 instead. It heated the cabin well but to many feedings for my liking. Was going to upgrade to a 118 in 2020 but Jotul stopped selling them so I got the F45.

So far this "burning season"; I've burned around 2/3-3/4 cord of ash and box elder..........................It's been relatively mild save for the below 0*F and 40+mph winds the week of Christmas. Yesterday was about 32*F with almost no wind................I put 3 3 split loads thru my 13NC starting when I woke up around 7:00am and my house got up to 71*F back by my bedrooms by around 4-5:00pm.............that's way TFH for both me and my dogs. I did put a load in prior to bed though and woke up to a 63*F house.

Burned about a cord, more than I typically do by this time. Previously burned mostly ash and this year it has been tulip poplar, not the best btu wise.

Wood consumption varies so heavily on the weather that I don't have a "normal" consumption rate.

Know the area fairly well. My grouse hunting stomping grounds as a kid. Still have our hunting shack just east of you. And a shack it is….

That's why I started weighing my loads...all wood species have about the same BTU's/lb (8600) so once you learn your house/stove combo you can load for the weather, no matter the species. (as long as the wood is consistently dry...doesn't work with wet wood)
I have a whole house furnace and the whole reason I started this method of loading was because it is so easy to miss your guess and come home to the house way too hot or cold if you are just guessing based on wood volume.
Did you have to push your stove during the cold weather there last weekend? That tulip doesn't coal up too bad so it actually works pretty good to push out high BTU's, as long as someone is around to load more often...

I agree, weight is the true measurement for the energy in wood, as long as the wood is dry its apple to apples. Energy per lb vs volume can vary a great deal.

I was running the stove pretty hard during the 0 degree and 30 mile per hour winds. I was around the whole time so it really didn't matter using lesser btu wood.

I don't really cherry pick through my stacks either it gets burned when I get to it. If I needed to just take the chill out of the house I may skip over some white oak in favor of something less potent but that's the exception to the rule.

I think you're doing pretty well gaberelli .

We've already burned about a cord of oak, ash, and maple since October as supplemental-ish heat. We have a fire just about every day in a Jotul F400, but it goes out every night and the heat kicks on.

We have a 130 year old, 1300 sq ft house with mostly original windows, so obviously not the most efficient space.

Nice! Took up grouse hunting again this year. Been quite a few years since I’ve done it. Only downed a few this year but they sure were tasty.

2200 sq feet - 2x4 walls fiberglass in walls and r48 in attic, good windows. Ideal steel is what heats the house 7x24. I burn 4-5 full cords a year. So far this year I’m at 3.5 cord turned to ash.

This is only my 4th burning season but I usually burn roughly the same amount during a typical winter. However I've only burned about 2 cords this year. Still have some out front on the patio and some in the woodshed out back. I usually have to restock the woodshed by late Jan early Feb. Lots of restarts this winter, blew through a lot of kindling.
