It's cold up in South Dakota. -17 when I woke up this morning. When the sun came up we had one of the best sun d0gs I've ever seen. These only happen when it's really cold outside and there's lots of ice particles suspended in the air. Feels like I'm in the Arctic up here. I've got the stove going full bore with some seasoned mulberry today. IMG_1032.jpg

I've never even heard of a sun dog, let alone seen one. Very cool, thanks for sharing.

Not a sun dog...not sure what it was, maybe just a hole in the clouds, but I took a pic because it was sure enough unusual! This was from yesterday about 4:30...

Looks like it could be a partial one - must have been cold out your way too! Here's another picture I took later on in the morning. It disappeared shortly after this. IMG_1048.jpg

Just saw this thread and it dawned on me that I had just seen at least a partial one. I went out to look and took this pic at 2:45 PM, -8*F and -35 wind chill. EB01D9A0-3D59-4A5A-9A23-BB3B9E56DB90.jpeg
Last night it got down to-18*F with howling winds , wind chills around -50F and to top it off the power went out at 8pm for almost exactly 12 hours.

I've seen partial sun dogs, but not even close to being as neat as those pics. Very cool.

Saw a mysterious sun at sunset this past summer here or maybe early fall. My bro told me a sun dog.
