Yep, and I think Hickory is a wood that wears out gloves faster than many species too...and lots of splinters if you don't wear 'em...
It burns hot! Not sure if its longevity is impacted... I load the stove twice a day. Sometimes there's hickory in the load, sometimes there isn't.
You must forgiveth thy ignorance Eric. At the time I had not yet experienced the pleasures of the Monster Maul. Little did thy know the destruction and havoc he could instill with a single blow! The screams from the knotty Hickory rounds rang through the hilltops like thunder across a lake.
My splitter is a kinetic SuperSplitter. I do have a homeade log lift that I made. I've had several people tell me it's too slow. Maybe it is a bit slow, but there aren't any hydraulics to tap into on these machines, and adding hydraulic power packs and all the needed items to go with one get pretty expensive pretty quick. I did save several big Hickory rounds to test on the lift in a future video!
Credit where credit is due, a huge part is the user. Now me, I'm about 3' 2" tall so you won't ever catch me laying waste to large hickory rounds with my monster maul.
Hey that’s some nice fabrication skills. Nice job. Yeah it’s a little slow. One of the fastest ways for humans to travel is being shot out of a cannon. Fastest isn’t always the best hahaha If you could mount that rocker switch up near the actuating lever of the splitter you could access it from either side. It could be lifting/lowering while you’re moving from side to side. Save a little time anyway.
It could be wired so that once "up or down" is activated, a relay latches in until end of the stroke, and then a limit switch(s) added at the end of the stroke opens the relay to shut it off...that way you could be doing something besides holding a button during that time. Like the auto return on a hyd splitter...
The first 25 seconds is Red Oak, as are the two pieces frozen together at around the 1:06 mark. The rest/majority is Shagbark Hickory.
