    This week would have been Dan Blocker's 94th birthday. Dan was born on Dec. 10, 1928 in De Kalb, Texas. Not mentioned is that, after completing a master’s degree in drama in 1950, Dan was drafted and was serving in the Korean War the next year. He was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division. Blocker and the 179th Infantry Regiment were engaged in heavy combat for 209 days. During this time, he was wounded in action while rushing to the aid of his fellow troops. He received a Purple Heart for his actions and attained the rank of Sergeant.
    After leaving the Army in 1952, Dan didn’t plan to be an actor. He moved to Los Angeles to pursue a doctorate at UCLA. One day, acting found him when he was standing in a phone booth dressed as the Texan that he was. A talent scout noticed him in his normal Texas attire as Dan was making a phone call. The scout thought Dan would be perfect for TV westerns. It happened just like that, by happenstance.
    And the rest, as they say, is history.
