I know people that use everything from used motor oil to the manufacturer brand bar oil. I have been using the County Line brand from tractor supply, and they had a weekend sale that ends tomorrow for 7 bucks a gallon, so I went and bought them out. If you need some and have a store in your area, I have no trouble running it in any temperature and my four huskies all seem to do fine with it. Huski gallons near me run 12-14 a gallon.
If you have a Walmart nearby the green jug Pooland oil comes on sale a few times a year. I've bought it for around $8/gal. It seems to be a bit thick compared to the Stihl oil to where it won't sometimes lube enough. I thin it down with a cup or two of diesel and it has been perfect. ATF/Hydraulic oil seems to work just fine on my processor. It's roughly about the same price as bar oil, a 5 gal pail runs about $45-50 for AW-32
I had trouble with the Husky oil last february, almost didn't want to come out of the jug it was so cold. Had to use stihl winter oil. Both more than the $7/gal your talking about Greg. Might have to take a trip over tomorrow. GLO!
I didn't care for the TSC oil in temps under 40 deg, as it gets real thick then. I use it for warmer weather however and always pick up a couple gallons when goes on sale for $7/gal like that.
I'm just about to get started on my last gallon, so I'm upset I'll miss this deal. However, it'll go on sale again at some point. If I'm in a real pinch, the local grocery has it for about $9/gallon most of the time. It'll take a little bit for me to get through a gallon though.
I need some bar oil. Thinking of going the Canola route. But for that price I'll pick some up if I get a chance tomorrow. Thanks for the heads-up!
Thanks for the tip. I've been using Stens bar oil at about $9.99 a gallon. It's red just like how my Stihls came from the dealer. Don't know why I like that, but I do.
I always thought the TSC stuff was a little thick too, but I wonder if this is the same with a different label or really a different oil. I'm going to be 1/2 mile from TSC tomorrow so will probably grab some, I'm down to just under 2 gallon.
I picked up some of that, it's been working fine this summer, haven't used it in the winter yet, I have some canola oil for that. Do you thin that down for winter only? Or thin it for summer also?
You're probably right on that. I've not had a problem with the tsc oil and 30° this past winter milking some small boards. I used some save a chain and its a little thinner. I'll probably buy some more of it next time I see if for real cold use if I plan on cutting when its that cold.
If the saw is thoroughly warmed up, even the thick stuff works fine as long as you can pour it in the tank. Those long milling cuts ought to do the trick nicely.
Some take 2 tanks of each to make at 8-10' long. No problem getting it warm especially with the exhaust hitting the log and bouncing back. I've seen bar oil almost boiling in the huskies.
Here's the stuff I really like but the shop I always buy it from is about 1 hour away in an area I used to frequent for work but don't anymore. I just found it online at another shop about 1 hour another direction in Wooster OH and they have it on a promo for 7.99 if you buy 4. Shop I bought at before was 11.99 but 10.00 if I bought 2 or more.
Got 2000 gallons of heavy weight (thinking prolly 70W) high temp hydro oil from a bankrupt plastic injection mold company about 8 years ago. Got paid to haul it out. Been mixing in filtered WVO from a restaurant my GF manages. Run it in in saws and all diesel equipment. Only engine that don't like eating it is a Deutz. Go ahead :firepit:me !
