Sounds like a fun time! Nice doe by the way! Not to tough and old but still big enough for some good meat. My brother and I hunted flintlocks at our place in northern PA a couple saturdays ago. Pretty cold morning that gave way to 30 degrees and sun. Tracks everywhere, but most a day old. He posted first and I made a walk around to the head of the valley to meet him. There was 3” of the hardest noisiest snow is ever been on! We split and I posted and waited for him to make a swing across the end of the second valley. We could here the blue jays out ahead of him and going over the back side off of our property. We evened up on opposite side of the valley and made our way to the camp road at the bottom. Lots of tracks, deer, squirrels, fox, coyote, turkeys and fishers. We came down to the road preparing to climb the hill up the other side when he came running up to me and said he had seen 15 deer in the field across the camp rd. We tried to make a game plan playing the wind and decided to circle above them and sneak down to the corner of the field. The deer had the woods completely dug up roughly 2-“3” into the ground. Not sure what they were eating there since it is a stand of maples. We made the corner of the field and only one doe was left in the field. She had heard us coming and was wandering into the brush. I sat and my brother tried to circle above her but she had already past him to the top of the ridge, snorting the whole way. No shots until we went back to camp for some target practice. Probably walked 5 miles. Total critter count for the day.... 15 deer,6 turkeys, 2 grouse, 7 squirrels, 1 pileated tree knocker, 4 quail. Was hoping to see some bear, but they were probably sleeping....
Thanks. We see the same "digging" and think the deer are feeding on small roots. Maybe tree roots, but it seems to always be in ferny areas. I spent a lot of time hunting Tioga County in Pa, north east of Wellsboro. Kilt a lot of deer up there.
hi carbohydrate content. Friend raised many varieties of Hostas . The deer would tear up the beds. Some of these plants went for $100+ apiece. Guess which ones were the deer's favorites.
I have an opportunity to pick up one of these Lyman Great Plains muzzle loaders for free. I’m thinking it’ll make a nice wall hanger, although I will have to take it out on occasion just for fun. There’s something cool about a firearm that sends 54 caliber lead balls downrange
Yeah Lyman Great Plains flinters! Grab em both if possible and if you don’t want or need them consider them sold by sending me a PM
They are good shooters and for free, it don't get no better than that. they are kinda pricy now. i'd run to get them for free.
One will be coming home with me after the holidays. My uncle is getting the second one. Looks like I’ll have to pick up some lead, black powder, and percussion caps soon
Ha, actually I do. But it’s a sand and gravel operation. Which is considered a mine in the eyes of the government
