I wasn’t going to make a thread about this small amount, but seeing it all split and loaded up, I guess it’s kinda sorta FHC worthy Now that the ground cover has died back, I’m finding all the roadkill wood left to rot in the ditches along the backroads. Yesterday I came across this black cherry with the bark falling off and rotten sapwood. Heartwood still solid. I’m guessing this has been down since tropical storm Isaias hit in August 2020. Unfortunately the bulk of it was pretty far gone, but luckily I was still able to salvage something. I think this brings me up to about 3/8 cord of cherry on hand between all the small scores of it I’ve gotten so far this year.
All firewood. A couple years ago I made a large batch of cherry smoker chips, and I’m sure I won’t need any more for the foreseeable future. I really like cherry as firewood. Not a heavy hitter BTU-wise, but it coals well and I enjoy the aroma both in processing and burning.
Definitely thread worthy! Nice grab. Did you split on site? Amazing what shows up now that all the weeds etc have died off. Ive recently started to appreciate cherry heartwood's rot resistance. I find bits and pieces at random scores and take it as well.
Yep, split right on site. Started yesterday, the rest I cut and split on my lunch break today. There’s more there but too far gone for my liking.
