I now have an ~gulp~ empty rack. It was full of shoulder wood. It's just off the deck of the screen house It can't be left like that for long, right? I have had my eyes on an ash that didn't leaf-out this past summer. EAB is hitting the area hard. The ash has a lean. Blue arrow it ash. Red arrow is where I'm now pulling from. One of the furthest areas in the woodyard. An area I don't snowblow to. Another angle. It's got a bit of a tricky top. The trunk lean is to the left. But the top of the tree wants to go to right. The bottom and area to be felled I'll be cutting it just above the stacked wood it's holding up. My plan is to wrap some rope/straps just above the cut, to help prevent any barber chairing. Face cut will be ~45⁰ to the left of the lean. That should push it enough to avoid the wood racks you can see behind it and to the right. 1/3 through with face cut. 1/3 of the way through on the back cut. Then felling wedge time and see if it goes where I want it. If necessary, I'll nibble away at the hinge until gravity takes over. It'll slide down a standing dead red maple. A small EWP might be collateral damage. No big loss around here. Not sure when I'll do this. After Thanksgiving, for sure.
but the question is...is there enough wood to fill the empty rack? Looking forward to seeing it come down. Work safe my friend.
Hey that looks mighty convenient. Even if it partially fills the rack, thats that much less filling for spring time. We're watching our supply dwindle here too. Working on these stacks on the front as once snow moves in, they will be difficult to access. This is a stacking up pic,but between the one pictured and the one not seen behind stumpy, is 3 cord. Hoard on Mike. Got good weather for the moment....
I snowblow to a certain point, just beyond the compost bins. I'll pull from beyond that point, until it really snows. I have plenty of other ready stacks, when that happens. Including 3 racks of red oak, CSS'd on 7/18. 4+ years.
The furry love of my life. She's 5. And more loyal than most people. And always happy to see me....esp in the wee hours of the night coming home from work.
It appears that eventually, is tomorrow morning. A buddy of mine will be onsite as another pair of eyes, and opinions. I wrapped the trunk this morning, just above where I'm planning to cut it. The plan remains to wedge it over, with 2 feet on ground, after a bit of backcut.
Got me a bit nervous there Mike. Thought you were felling off the ladder until i read the end. Good luck and be safe.
Ha!!! Saw the new post in this thread and thought the same thing Brad did!! That was a quick eventually... Lookimg forward to pics of the progress Mike!
Im out at my score today. All my help has bagged off, so just splitting and piling like a fool. The Boy and I counted 13 trees down here yesterday....as we unearthed another stump. So much for "they're taking 6 trees down". Pic of one stump..
Yeah it is. Lotsa work, but having a 5 year stash (not counting this winter's wood) and working to our 6th is a good thing. Planning on throttling back this spring to get some house tasks done.
