I can't imagine 35 cords, did he burn that much himself? I can't fathom how much time it would take to process that with no power tools! Tell us more about Gramps. = In another thread (above was going to be posted there but I started another post), Canadian border VT mentioned that his Gramps processed 35 cords/yr with no power tools. Made me wonder about Gramps and then I thought there is bound to be a bunch of other stories people could tell on some older person in their past. Whether funny, poignant or just interesting. I hope some will share. First, what about Gramps!
Gramps was a farmer lived near MT Washington on VT side of river; had a farm. Farm took from 30-35 full cord between 2 wood stoves for heat and “ma” cook stove also wood burning. The maple syrup operation was more probably another 8-10 cord but that ended in April. Farm equipment was horse drawn. 190?-1945 time period .
Ma old cook book has maple syrup to sugar conversion in many recipes during war; sugar stamps were saved and traded. sugar shack was an additional wood. Realize their was no insulation.
My gramps was a memorable man to me. He taped his gloves as they got holes. He also told me as a kid, "never be afraid of a little hard work". He lived on a salt pond near the ocean, and had zero problem shooting geese and tossing then in the pond. The tide took the bodies, and the blue crabs ate well, but shotgun rounds over the water got someone in the family to take his gun....
