Was in my bunch of hedge and honey locust score I got back in the summer…. It’s got fairly smooth bark, light colored wood on the inside and splits fairly easily. What’s weird is a couple of the pieces have a yellowish tint to one side… I was thinking a maple… but that yellowish wood is throwing me off…

It does kind of resemble red maple a bit. But that stringiness… could that be young hickory? What’s it smell like?

Do you have TOH in your area? I’ve never split any, but the bark looks like TOH to me.

    I
Was thinking of some sort of trash tree. It almost looks similar to China berry that I cut around here. When cleaning field edges at the farm or blowdowns out of hedgerows I will end up with some of it that I burn.

Although looking at the grain it doesn't look the same as China berry. If I remember what I cut seems to alternate more light dark light dark in the grain.

My thoughts too. TOH has a center pith and i see that in the rounds Kevin. The heartwood has a faint yellowish color IME.

With a little time and heat it will smell like smoke.

So I have a small cord of TOH left after I gave some away. It’s stacked right where I’m building a new pallet pen. Basically getting blocked in.
Decided to bring some to the house. I’m burnin it straight off the uncovered pile. Stuffs not half bad. Load the stove more often but it flames up really nice and makes heat. I’ll have no qualms about tossing it in the mix from now on.

When its dry its not as light as other SS woods. I mix a split or two into bundle wood. Just doesnt dry as fast as them IME. Not listed on the FHC btu chart. Wonder where it would fall on that?

i mixed it the bundles too. Also agree it doesn’t dry as fast. Then again I’ve never covered any either.

Iirc its density is pretty close to Ash but it feels a bit lighter imo. I would say 19-22 btus.
