Cutting some small down ash this afternoon and this thought popped in my head. Which would dry faster once turned into splits? A fresh cut living ash or one thats dead and waterlogged after laying on the ground (not punky, but good meat)?

Thoughts, input, or experience on this FHC? Im thinking the down dead.

I'd say the waterlogged...log, for some reason I've always thought waterlogged wood won't give off the same soot/creosote.
Don't ask me to explain my reasoning with science or anything :D:doh:

I agree, the dead one gets my vote to dry quicker after split.

When a tree is living it’s basically a water pump, so the vascular system is full of water.

Another vote for waterlogged. Two years ago I cut a dead/down ash in early October and stacked it single row and top covered. Come late February, my uncle was in a jam for firewood so I gave him the ash. He said it burned great, with no water coming out of the ends either. I doubt that would’ve been the case with a live ash.

I agree. A waterlogged Ash will dry quicker. I cut and split dead, waterlogged trees and stack them in the sun on my asphalt driveway. I’ll burn it a couple days later. It will be try as a bone if we get a good sunny stretch.

I often wonder how fast a green split will take to dry on a hot paved driveway in the Summer. Ive taken green sugar maple cookies, placed them on my black grill in the hot sun and they burned great in the firepit a few days later. Our driveway is gravel btw.

Yeah, the black asphalt driveway is a secret weapon of mine. Even in the dead of winter, I’ll spread frozen splits out in the sun for a few hours. If they “clack” when I knock em’ together later on - I’ll burn them that night.
