First one that has good compression had a filthy air filter. Also the fuel filter cap fell off, weight was off, and the foam insert clogged with sawdust. Going to clean it up and see if she runs. I sprayed the air filter with brake cleaner and it did a great job of cleaning it up.
^^^ x2 ^^^ Air compressor and a minute of your time when done cutting makes all the difference in the world.
Not saying those saws ever got cleaned, but 200,201’s wad up the filters worse than any saw I’ve used. One use and they are packed. I looked at buying a 200t a few weeks ago. Couldn’t find one out of 4 that didn’t have issues.
Not at this time. In fact, there's another set of ms200t twins that needs to be looked at. I'll ask but I don't think so either. Very excited to do a piston/cylinder on a top handle saw as I have not done one previously.
Well there was a 201tc I fixed yesterday that wouldn't shut off with the switch. It too was just as filthy as these. I just stripped it down, cleaned the big parts in the parts washer, put it back together, and it worked. So there you go right there - evidence suggesting that keeping your saw clean will help keep it running properly. When I say filthy I mean filthy.
Took a look at the second one and yeah it needs a piston and cylinder. The soark plug hole is stripped. The old plug came out weird and would go back in...weird....and when I tried to put a new plug in, no dice. The plug wasn't even in the hole which is why it had no compression. The tip of the plug was also broken and stuck inside the plug wire.
Thanks. Not that i need one but hearing so much about them its on my bucket list. Looks like those were just used and used and abused. Are you doing small engine work part time LOTF?
Those are the most desired saws of most climbers, I've got 6 of them (200T's and 020T's), they are definitely one of the most powerful top handles ever built and worth repairing. Mine don't see much use in the tree nowadays though, thanks to these modded Echo CS2511T's....
Can you get away with a heli-coil thread insert? Might be an easy way out if the piston and cylinder look good
I'm just helping out a buddy who needs help. But it does feel good to bring stuff back to life that was destined for the garbage. Plus I really enjoying the learning of a new skill part.
So another weird thing these plugs are supposed to be 14mm and the new one is.....but the old one measure over 15mm. I think this saw got super over heated and the plug popped out of it. The hole for the plug is too big for the new spark plug!! It will not catch any threads at all and both are NGK BPMR7A plugs! So I whipped out the caliper and lo and behold this is what I saw (no pun intended): BuckthornBonnie MasterMech M2theB have you guys seen this before???
Well that is interesting. Never seen a plug with that thread but when I get a minute I am going to do a little homework. I have seen 14mm , 18,mm some massive thread they used in tractors from the 40's but never that. Do you think at one time the original 14mm got stripped so someone found that plug with a larger thread and rethreaded it to make it work?
I admire your enthusiasm for the learning part. For some reason working on small or even large engines doesnt appeal to me in the least. If i havent already, ill compliment the work you do and how thorough you are in doing it.
Thanks man appreciate it. I think I've said it before it's very similar to working on computers or cars. My old life was being an IT guy and I do almost all of the wrenching on my vehicles so this type of work becomes me.
I saw this at the dealer the other day. $799 for a MS201TC. That was the price of a 372xp not too long ago! Now those are $1150 with a 24" bar!!!
Thats why i snagged my redmax(husquvarna) top handle brand new on ebay soon as i seen the price drop to 320 free shipping…these new orange saws are unaffordable for me
