Brad, your rounds always look uniform. Do you measure with a stick or eyeball it or how? I've been using a crude stick for over a year, painted ends red so I don't lose it. I have a 2nd wood that I wrapped bright yellow duct tape at the ends for visibility, works even better to keep from losing.
Thanks Bill. I use a simple 6' carpenters folding ruler. Been using one in the trade for 35+ years. Slips very nicely in the back pocket. Ive used poles and sticks and lose them and fall back to old reliable.
I use a tape measure and pink sidewalk chalk (pink seems to show the best on all bark types) They can stay on me while Im cutting, so no getting lost.
Well finally made it back to this score and find the wood gone with only gnarlies left behind. I dint think it would be touched being bigger logs and pushed into the woods. This happens often when i cant get back to a "surprise find" score right away and its off my beaten path. This was 20 minutes the other way. I had a delivery near by and planned it that way. Look like the perpetrators used a hydro roadside judging by all the bark and splitter crumbs. First time ive seen that. Cant win em all. Its the time of year when hoarders are active. Wonder if theyre trying to burn it now???
shame. It’s my belief a score should be attacked vigorously once found. Once you start cutting it others will notice. They may not have stopped to scrounge on their own but once they see someone else do it they may jump into action. Maybe not in this case tho. A roadside splitter? Doesn’t sound like the shy type LOL
I agree 100%. Years back i discovered Asplundh cutting on route 17 in Durham. Talked to the crew and they said after three i could have at it. Showed up at three the next day at three sharp and within 15 minutes two other guys show up. Im like WTH happened. Plenty of wood to go around. One guy taking the smaller limb wood in sections and the other way noodling the big oak rounds. After seeing him do that i lost my shyness about cutting roadside. I had delivery and initially discovered it en route. I try to plan accordingly but snooze and lose. I "discovered" another fresh cutting on my way home after my disheartening discovery of this. Right up my alley wood wise. JONESING to cut it ASAP and even in the rain. You know what it is?
Pine? Yeah I don’t know what’s going on in your neck of the woods. Must’ve got a trillion dollars of federal tree removal money. It’s like they never stop. In 2018 when I talked to the tree warden at my big score he told me his budget for the year was $5000. Can’t cut many trees with that kind of money. That’s why he was ecstatic someone was carting them off for him. Saved half his budget in one month
This requires an investigation by the FHC forensics task force. I want names, saw and splitter id asap! Leave no piece of bark unturned. Sorry it’s another rain day and I feel trapped.
Same here, but 2yo grand daughter and sick cat keeping us busy. I have a score of a "certain" wood that im REALLLLLY dying to go cut. Dont wanna snooze and lose.
Yeah ya know that twig you tossed aside the other day? We’ve been meaning to talk to you about that incident. Just turn yourself into the nearest field office. No need to make this harder than it has to be.
funny! Brad, sorry that one got away. The idea of splitting right there is a good one. 'course then I couldn't take the trailer with me for the purpose of loading it with wood . . .so a second vehicle with the splitter would be good.
