What's up, folks? So, I just came upon a pile of wood up for grabs on the side of the road. I thought it was all from the same tree, but maybe not. The pieces that are more orange in color are heavier than the white ones. Any idea what I have here? (I'm thinking possibly birch for the orange colored logs?) If it's any good, I may go get some more. Thanks. AD636D87-ADBE-4BAB-968D-A429594C8C5B.jpeg 88193CAF-432C-4CE3-8A48-BCC61990E59A.jpeg BB0A87F2-C959-4D9C-AC07-3C3C6F944EF2.jpeg

Second picture left to right: black birch, black birch, red maple, red maple, black birch, red maple.
Edit: could be yellow birch. Either way, both make good firewood.

I'd say it's black birch, like Jack Straw said. Split one and give it a sniff, it'll smell like wintergreen. Great firewood if it is BB.

Edit: 3 pieces of black birch and three pieces of red maple

Thanks, fellas. FHC never disappoints. At first I didn't smell anything, but when I cut off a piece of bark and took a sniff, Yes, VERY minty.
I went back and got some more. AA5D4A05-69C7-4023-85A2-617241FBE820.jpeg

You done real good there. Black birch and red maple. The striated bark ones are birch. Nice rounds and good on you for being Johnny, uh well FHCer on the spot.

"Striated bark"? I'm not familiar with this. Does that mean the horizontal lines on the black birch?

That is some real sweet stuff you got there. I got a good score of black birch back in 2020. Fixing to burn some of it this year. Get it split ASAP. I didn't get to a couple rounds back then, they were starting to punk this year. Supposed to be great wood, better than ash and maple.

I like to mark the ends with a "BB" (black birch) or some other designation based on wood type. Red oak for example below.

I only mark a few, per rack.
