I needed to cut up a few limbs yesterday and the 261 was empty and my can was empty from the gas sucking blower. I checked the 262 and it had enough gas. On the first pull attempt the handle popped out of my hand. Pulled again until it popped off. Choke off, pulled, fired and it appeared the chain was spinning backwards. It died and I cranked it again and the chain was spinning in right direction. Is it possible for a crank to spin in opposite direction, or was it an optical dilussion? The saw ran and cut good.

Sober as a nun and I swear the saw was running and chain spinning backwards. It’s the only Husky I’ve used that impresses me with throttle response and chain speed, so it made me wonder if someone had altered the timing and somehow that made it momentarily spin in reverse. I’ve taken some hard hits to the head too, so :loco:

Yup, it they can do that, my ms361 did that a few times.....
It has something to do with the timing being off, I think.

    2 stroke can run backwards.

Ski Doo snow machine has a button that actually reverses engine rotation, so it is able to back up.
When I was into RC planes they would often run backwards.
I have never had a saw actually run backwards myself but heard of it.

That would freak me out! Because I have to question myself as I age and can't depend on my brain like I used to, lol.

Yessir they can run backwards. Not well cuz the spark is a bit late.
I have an old railroad car engine with a lever for spark timing. You get it to about die and flip the lever and it runs in reverse.
It's possible to put the timing in just the right spot and the engine will just keep changing direction never going over center.

I’ve had diesel trucks run backwards a time or two, never a saw though.

My '04 Polaris 700 Classic does the same thing. Push the reverse button, the engine stops, restarts in reverse and goes.

That's in case you mis cut, kinda like a do over. They say you can back the saw out if you pinch it also.
I remember having a little kubota tractor that we pull started as youngsters (dead battery) and we finally figured out what was going on when it had 4 reverse gears and 1 forward. :D

All the major brands that offered 2 strokes had push button reverse where it would start and spin in reverse to have a non mechanical chain case sled with reverse. Super smart, barely any additional weight, just a couple of switches compared to the mechanical reverse.

My son's '01 Polaris 600 Classic has the mechanical reverse system. Personally, I prefer his mechanical reverse over my push button reverse.

    Just my $0.02, YMMV, NYH1.

I had mechanical reverse on my 2000 polaris 600xcsp. It worked great, and I noticed no issues with possible loss of power or speed as some people eluded to back in the day. There was no debate about the chain cases weighing less on the electronic reverse, however.

Bought a 96 Polaris 600 that had the mechanical reverse. Worked at the dealer for a foot or so. Never got it to work for me. Looked inside and it was all metal shavings LOL
My 2015 Polaris 600 had the electronic reverse. Worked well.
Recently saw that some of the small kids ATV’s use the same technology.

I only had to do 3yrs of Catholic school to get reformed. I still have flashbacks of the mean study hall nun. Maybe she was always hungover, or just disliked the only Protestant student.
