Saw an ad on marketplace for free wood, finally near me. I worked last night and was awake for 24 hours as of this morning. I wasn't about to play with a chainsaw in that state of mind, so I went this afternoon at 3. Of course most of it was gone, all the black birch, hickory and maple, gone. What was left was a nice size red oak. I finished bucking it, while my son monster mauled it. I loaded my truck about 3/4 full, and didn't want to chance the tires since they were starting to bulge. Came right back for another half truck. I have never seen rings that wide on red oak before. I didn't see a water source nearby either.
Some primo wood there Pricey. I know the feeling when the better stuff is taken. Most hoarders like the Goldilocks wood. Heck, i like Goldilocks wood as does my back. Great to see you hoarding again!
Kinda looks like pin oak which grows faster than other oaks. If its in the open with minimal or no competing trees it will grow faster like that.
X2 with pin oak. Still the red oak family and good firewood. Nice straight grain trunk for the win too
Never heard of that term before but I'll use it if you can explain what it means to you. Nice score Pricey.
I think you got the best of it. Maybe aside from the Hickory. A good grab of oak is great. Good you had help too, thats the way we do it here, boosts productivity significantly.
Goldilocks wood was a termed used by jrider to describe wood thats not too large or small. I think 12-16" was his ideal size. He deals with a lot of large sized rounds and i feel for him as does my back. A term that should be in the FHC lexicon.
I'm glad you explained it to me so well. This is exactly what I try to pick up all the time. My last load of rounds were Black Locust rounds and exactly as you state, nothing was over those diameters. I was using a wheel barrow for carting it out and my tailgate is not working.
