No not a thread about an ex GF. Huge sugar maple from the score i cut last week. Wasnt going to touch it but recently bought a square ground semi skip 36" chain in a bulk lot and was itching to try it out. Large logs seldom at my disposal and this easily accessable. 500i did most of the cutting and 460 had noodling duty. Something metal that pulled out easily Lots of noodles with a few bigguns left. Couple i wont be able to roll if i go back Even the small noodled chunks were heavy. I didnt heaping load it this time as half hour ride to storage. Split maybe 40% of the load off the PU. The other side of the property has a tangled mess. If i go back some of this will top off a load. Couple hemlock logs maybe mill fodder. My verdict on the square grind. Cut okay new out of the box. Not a lot of experience using the 36" bar so not fair for me to rate it vs conventional ground chain.
Another phenomenal score My back hurts just looking at those pictures. Heavy stuff, that fresh cut sugar maple. Are you going back for any of that white oak?
How did the 36" bar do with the 500? I've yet to roam into that range... 28" is all I've been using so far...
I think its the heaviest of the hardwoods. Oak and hickory a close second. Wasnt too bad as i chunked them small. Back feels it now. Not sure about going back. The other cut in New Haven (where i cut that FBM mulberry in May) fell through so no current score to cut other than this. Its in Woodbridge which is far for me. Maybe ill keep the long bar on the 500 and hit it again. White oak and red maple in the tangle with the hemlock. At least those are Goldilocks sized. Guessing the SM will be half a load. Waiting for a good frost to kill off all the roadside overgrowth. Locust mania will be coming back. Anything lined up for you? Interstate wood near work?
Second or third outing with 36 on the 500. Normally run full skip normal ground at that length. This was semi skip square ground. It did okay. Doesnt fly through it, but doesnt bog either. Didnt lean into the cut. I think 28 is ideal but ive been having a ball running just the 20 bar on it. Kinda wish i had a 661 for this cut. Is the 500 your highest CC saw Kevin?

That's some pretty wood. I really wish I had access to some sugar maple. I can tell by the picture of your loaded pickup that it's heavy stuff.
Thats a real nice offer RB! Not a lot of guys would loan out a saw like that. Some great folks here and im proud to be associated with them. The geography nerd in me looked it up and at least an hour just to the NY state line
It is very heavy. What, if any, maples grow out your way? Its a very popular yard planting and common "sidewalk" planting in urban areas. Very common in the wild too. Urban trees very gnarly as they grow out not up. I found this sugar maple the other day right across the street from a customer. Big tree, part rot, gnarly trunk and not much in the way of straight splits. There was still a 20'+ spar to fell. Great firewood, but a bit too much work noodling to get pretty splits. I didnt ask if its for the taking, but less than a mile from me. Taken down as its a hazard to wires.

Just what I wanted to see. I was cutting on the red oak yesterday and got 14 blocks out of the remainder of the trunk. Pieces cut to 16 inch. Looks like they are all in the 200lb range. They will be noodled and then each half will be split into thirds so I can handle them. My back hurts thinking about it.
