Anyone CSM honey locust?

Pretty crazy when you bring a 42” bar and you’re 26” shy of making clean buck cut!!
Heck no on a bigger saw. I’m not getting any younger and the 394 w/ the 42” isn’t exactly light weight. If I can’t slice it up w/ that, he11 I’ll walk away, and we both know that ain’t happenin’ lol.

If I didn’t have a grinder to sharpen, I wouldn’t be milling this. Very greatful to Duane for selling me the Simington.

 

Yes, ported 394. I neglected to get a pic but we sticker stacked all the planks on the skid steer and they were taken into a barn. Might get one later.

 

wonder how stable it is while drying. Im still mad about losing some of the HL at that score from May. The big trunk wouldve been nice to CSM but i dont do that. Wanted smaller diameter logs for buzz-saw's mill. Sure makes some pretty stock. Even as boards they had to be friggin heavy.
You taking any?

 

Yeah, the 2 2.5” slabs were ignorant. I had to have the homeowner help me on the big end. Cut 2 at 1.5”, then after seeing how slow it was going, they had me make em a little thicker. The 3.5” one will have to be slid right on to forks.
No plans to keep any of the slabs. Definitely taking the firewood and then we discussed an hourly rate to mill.

The base was 46” on bottom and about 15’ to the crotch that was 68”. Average the two and I get 57” for this:


Over 15,000 pounds! That’s pretty crazy.

Band mill is soooo much quicker but imagine the equipment needed to pick it up and move it. Then, do they make any mills big enough to handle that size stick?


I’ll definitely keep posting pics. Probably going back after work tomorrow, and the next day, and the next… .

 

I'm not sure, but I sure as heck wouldn't want to pay for it if they do. That mill would be tens of thousands of dollars I'd reckon.

 

Out of curiosity, I just looked. Wood-Mizer makes one @ 67". Starts at $69,995.

Last Sunday i delivered some wood for a regular. He's a boat builder. Takes me to a neighbor up the street who spoke the language. Showed me a beech slab...4'x18' sliced 4" thick. I forgot camera and out of respect wouldnt ask to take any. Lots of BL and sassafras used in his many projects around the place.
I did snap a pic of his "corn crib" when i left. All post and beam with milled wood used for construction.
Its a hang out with a bar. I couldve stared at it forever inside and out. I was in awe. Not the best pic.

 

Lets get one and put it on the FHC tab. We could trade in the corporate helicopter!

 

I didn't even pay that for my house..........not even close. Lol Whenever someone tells me I need a bandsaw mill, that's what I think of. For large chunks of wood, it just isn't feasible. 2500 for saw and mill, or 70k for a bansaw mill. Then as you mentioned, the equipment to move the wood. Might as well dang near double the cost.

I'm fine taking forever, to save that kind of money. Lol

That Canon linked earlier was $625. And bike shop boss told me he’s going to sell me the tire changer and balancer, so there goes my “play” account.

Day 2. Made 3 cuts.

After some measuring, decided to cut 2 @ 4". Which ended up getting me very close to the crack.

How long is it taking you per slab? Any idea?

 

I’ve not actually timed a cut but I’d guess 20-30min. Halfway refuel prolongs it a bit. Plus by myself, and the mill got stuck at the end because the log flared a bit too wide. Had to trim and it ended up messing up the smooth finish, as you can see here. Another middle brace would have helped or an extra set of hands to steady it.


No more big wood like this, unless it’s figured maple,, or flame birch,, or .


Just spent about 15 minutes on the grinder to freshen up two 135 driver loops.

 

That HL is some pretty stuff. Those pics brought a smile to my face!

 

After two completely overcast and wet/damp days, I finally got back this evening.



5 cuts, last pic was @ 6:45. Got there about 5 or a little before. Last two cuts took longer because I kept having to trim to finish the cut. After this log I think I’m going to call it on milling and finish w/ firewood.

So fellers and fell-ettes, what do I charge him?
