My front teeth are 1/2 fake, broke them roller skating ~6-7yo. Needless to say I've never roller skated ever again:D.
I broke one of them off 6 yrs ago eating ribs - that was a frustrating wait to see the dentist.

Had one RC ~15yrs ago, eating something and it felt like the tooth pulled out of my jaw. They do all the base material and wait a couple weeks to make sure the root is going to hold before saddling you with the bill for a crown

They will try to talk you into it anyway, saying your teeth will shift and get crooked. I have a space that I lost before I was 20 (I am 61 now) and the one next too it leaned over a bit, the others are fine. But if you are young (20's or 30's) you might want to consider a bridge, if you can afford it.
And this sounds kind of like mooching, but you will be surprised what they might "throw in" if you tell them you just plain can't afford it.

Leaning towards getting it pulled. $2000 to fix, $300 to pull. It has multiple very old fillings in it, and I have difficulty trying to floss so I will have one less tooth to floss!

I just have no idea if I will miss it? Also the dentist mentioned the price of gold has increased dramatically since my last cap several years ago. I have 4 days to decide.

$2k is steep for one tooth, then again it's molar - you'll start chewing on the other side all the time. If it's the most rear one I'd imagine it'd be ok, one in the middle you're talking strange chewing feeling
There will be that weird feeling of no tooth being there - and it is really hard to get used to...if ever.

I wonder what one of those whole mouth transformations runs? if one broken molar is 2k?

They don't have to use gold anymore, there are composite materials that are cheaper. FWIW, I had a hard time getting used to my missing molar, but now, after a year, I don't notice it, unless I bite down on something that stabs me in the gum.

Got the drilling and temp put in today (no root canal thank goodness). $1700 including gold crown.......(sigh). It was not as bad as I feared, except the drill got away at one point and chewed up the inside of my cheek, so stitches in there too :zip:

Unscientific poll on family: One side with strong healthy teeth were more apt to get it pulled. The other side with more tooth problems said SAVE it at any cost. Interesting!

Thank you everybody for your input!

--Sounds about right. I think my decisions would be based on the same criteria.
Hope your mouth is feeling better!

You have all of those teeth for a reason, you did the right thing.

I think the Dentist should have lowered the bill for hurting you.

The composite fillings are more expensive than gold and silver. Dentists use them becuase they look better, and they cure them instantly with that little UV device.

This is one of my major annoyances. My dentist uses all composite fillings, but then my crappy employer dental insurance (Delta) cheaps out and only reimburses fora silver filling. I get stuck with the rest.

    Dental insurance sucks.

Give you an example, my wife just had to have a small filling on a back tooth. When we got the insurance statement from Delta it showed that the dentist billed $184. Delta is supposed to pay 60%, which would be $110.

What did the actually pay? $59.08, with a note:
"under the contract, multi surface white fillings on back teeth are not allowed. If benefits are provided for this procedure they will be based on alternate benefit amount for silver fillings"

Late night snack, carefully chewing on other side. Heard slight crack. Darn temp is gone! Will this ever end? I need tomorrow to prepare for company, not spend most the day on dumb tooth!

Stupid is as stupid does. I never went back for my permanent gold crown even though I paid for it in full.

Tonight I cracked off the temp crown + more tooth. Sigh. Atleast it's not painful. What an ID10T I am.

    1. Call Dentist on Monday.
    2. Tell them you have been ill (not a lie, just don't elaborate). Make appointment.
    3. Put butt securely into automobile.
    4. DRIVE TO DENTIST. Do not pass go. Do not collect $100.
