I'm at the bench tinkering on saws and having a problem. Need advice on why the clutch keeps spinning back off of my barn find dolmar 116. Removed clutch to replace rim sprocket, re installed tight, fired up and it spun off and slung clutch parts across the shop. Located parts, re installed, really tightened it, Put On Clutch cover this time. Spun off again.
Any pointers or advice as to what I'm missing or doing wrong is appreciated...

Hmm... I'd say be sure that you're tight then go ahead and do some cutting with it. That must have been pretty funny to see that bad-boy fly across the shop!!

Could your timing be off causing it to run in reverse rotation spinning the clutch off?

It wasnt funny at the moment to have high speed metal zinging around in there. Its funny now though, I have 3 vehicles in there too, no broken windows or found dents yet.
I had run it plenty, when we found it with no bar and chain, or cover. Is it possible to have the timing off that bad to cause that?

It is doing some reverse kicking some way or another or maybe just a sudden stop?

I have only had a clutch come off when running without a bar and chain. Stuff goes everywhere :)

After hearing all the "clutch coming off" stories, I put a bar and chain and the cover on them before starting.

I heard the story about the guy starting his saw without the clutch bell on the clutch nor the cover. He did manage to find the shoes and springs.

no nothing unusual, but it can mess things up even with the cover on.
