G’evening fellas. Just scored a couple dead trees and am wondering if someone can help me ID them. No leaves to show, but I do know that the wood feels light and is very easy to split. Showed them to a friend and he suggested persimmon? What say you?

Looks persimmon’ish to me. Sometimes helps to rule out some trees. Was the a yard/city tree or a large wood lot score?

Looks like ash to me. Appears to be past its prime which is probably why it is light.

Looks like ash to me. Any signs of EAB activity under the bark The Electrical Lumberjack?

It came from my neighbor’s 30-acre wood lot.

Thank you sir! And yes, now that I have examined under the bark I do see some EAB marks. I didn’t even think to look for that! I’m guessing it must be Ash then?

I don't know what it is. I know it is not persimmon. It does not look like ash to me either, but I am not as certain about that.

Doesn’t look like persimmon to me and I would not describe it as light

Correct, in my experience it is not light in weight.

Gentlemen, I beg to differ. What he has is basswood (or some member of the same family). Check out the pic of the end cut, not smooth wood and the bark at the cut is fuzzy, too. I use it for kindling so have cut a fair share of it.

I could see your point but one of his rounds the heartwood is darker, typical of ash. Cant say ive ever seen it on basswood, not that ive cut a lot of it.

Next time I put the saw to a basswood or two I'll check for a darker center. It might be that what he has was dead/dying when cut vs living/healthy. All the stuff that's still down here is really weathered, can't tell diddly and I don't have time to cut a cookie off to check. Dry basswood is lighter than a popcorn fart....
