Got my Clydesdale installed today and running through a break in. Ditching the other stove shop was a great move.

hey that's been quite the journey!!
And if you'd said nothing, you'd still be heading with fossil fuel (ugh).
good on you for taking the initiative. I've been in a similar place. It's nice being on the other side.
How many break-in fires are required?
    Enjoy the warmth!

This problem is definitely not something I had even considered as an issue but I suspect the reliance on such other fuels are to blame so the trade off will be painful. Also those who decide to burn now, will they have enough fuel cut up for next year to continue on or will something resolve and they'll (hypothetically) go back to their old ways...?

It's absolutely beautiful. The build quality is a lot better than I expected.

I'm still learning how to run it, I've done 3-4 fires so far and what I'm finding is that it wants to run hot and once it's running hot the air control cannot tamp it down enough, probably due to the EPA mandated always-open air.

I think what it wants is a super hot initial fire to get going, and to clean the glass, and then immediately throttle down to cruise. If you throttle it too late it just takes off.

It will take some time to adjust to, but I can tell I'm going to be happy with it for a very long time. I fell asleep on the couch in front of it last night just basking in the heat with a glass of Lagavulin 16. It had to have been 80* in the room but for some reason the heat off a stove just hits different. Kinda like a dry hot tub. I have vaulted ceilings and a ceiling fan directly centered in the room and in winter mode the combination of air from the stove and air being pushed back down with the fan distributes the heat really really nicely.

Also I have a suspicion that I may be one of the first people to get one of these installed. I don't think I've seen a single other person with one of the new Clydesdales online anywhere. Ours was built in September, so this is a _brand new_ stove.

And a note: no ticking noises! I have heard so many stories that everyone's stove ticks as it heats up but ours is basically dead silent throughout the entire cycle.

Also what is the best thing to use to clean off the soot on my masonry? The previous owners of this house had the wrong size liner installed in this fireplace and it didn't draft properly and they had a serious smoke roll out at one point.

I'm thinking a nylon brush in a drill with soapy water.

If you go to a professional masonry store, they should have the right cleaners. I think it needs to be acid based to cut through the tar film the smoke leaves behind.

Making progress in learning how to run it. I've had it running since the day we got it and my central heating has not kicked on once. We slept with the windows open the other night in 40 degree weather which was amazing. The stove heats my entire house, all three floors. I run my air handler 24/7 and that distributes the heat very well. I really lucked out on the installation parameters here.

I did have to get over my fears and let the stove run up in temp and basically just ignore the cat thermometer. With a full burn going and the secondaries engaged, the cat thermometer was running past the OK range, past the TOO HOT range, and maxxing itself out. Which is insane, but I think just part of the break-in as it has now started to settle down. Before, I would be in TOO HOT regardless of how much wood was in there or where the air control was set. Now it's staying in the middle and behaving like I would expect it to.

I don't think my wood is a factor either. Actually for some reason wood seems to season here faster than other places. I have hardwoods put up 12 months ago that are reading 13% on a freshly split face.

Here's a look at the type of wood I'm burning:

No idea what it is but it's extremely heavy and extremely dry.

You really hit an ace and you'll learn about it even more. Congrats and happy heating. Your anecdote of the fire heat basking is serene and reminds me of my times when I just turned off the TV, reclined the blue chair and fell asleep more times than I can remember in that same heat.
