Popped a few big red oak rounds open this afternoon. I'm always amazed at how straight the grain is sometimes. My boy said "wow dad you blew that wood apart!" I explained to him that this would be easy if they were all like that.
It helps trees stay straight grained and grow big and strong if you put a little blue pill in the ground by them. If it takes more than 4 hours to split it please call a doctor.
It always amazes me the difference in splitting red vs. white oak. With white, it's usually stringy and the ram has to drive the wedge almost all the way to the foot plate on my splitter. Red often pops apart like a rubber band breaking as if there was outward pressure on it before the wedge hit it. I rarely have to go to the end of the travel either.
Yesterday I spit up a little over a rick cord of white oak, and I think I fought every piece right to the end. So I agree with it being stringy. As I was doing it, I was sure wishing it was red oak!
One of the reasons I love RO. Did you two take any big wiffs? I love the smell too, some not so much. I’ve only got the putrid smell once, on a base that was starting to decay a lot.
