Welp, did it. Bought a 462R Arctic, not that I need Arctic but that's what it is, lol. I figure if I ever choose to sell it, it might help. The big oak logs I am bucking (two winters' worth for me!)... I just felt that the 400 I got last winter, as good a saw as it is, for bucking 20" to 36" oak, I need something bigger. Because time is money and time in the cut kills my back. My helper that I usually have is often waiting for me to finish a cut when he could be loading rounds to the trailer. I will use it for a full scrounge tomorrow first time and better gauge its abilities. I look forward to a better back during the scrounge! I noodled a 42" oak round today and it's certainly strong, spitting those noodles for several feet.

I know not everybody is blown away by a 462 because I have read a few comments as such but to me, it's a good saw. It is hardly any heavier than a 400 and way stronger. I was going to buy one when I bought the 400 last year but I could not find a 462 M-tronic here. This has the Strait Shot muffler and the seller knows saws and it seems tuned right to me. Maybe the Mtronic knows what to do.

Worth noting, this knowledgeable seller's opinion is that the 462 was neck n neck with his Stihl 500i up to bar length of 28" and longer, the 500i was stronger. I will probably use a 25" bar as much as anything. Occasionally, the 20" and the 28".

Good choice. Havent used mine a whole lot. Next big wood cut ill throw the 25/28" on it and go to town. Sometimes hard to pick another 70cc+ saw when you own a 500i though.

Best of luck with it and be sure to post pics.

Being retired I normally don't cut if the temperature is below 20 degrees I can wait for a better day. I have a 572 xp g and I really like heated handles. I like to wear thin leather gloves and with heated handles that is enough in any temperature. The heat in the handles will even dry out wet gloves while you cut. Congratulations and injoy the new saw

Wow, I just realized that the 500i is 79cc. I knew that the 462 is 77cc, so, you are right. I didn't realize they are so close in displacement. Only 2cc difference. That's amazing that the 500i has that much more power; I have run a 500i side by side with a 462 and a 500i is on another level. The issue with me is weight. I am trying to find the lightest saw that can do what I want to do... buck big oak logs. The only thing I don't need on this particular 462 is the full wrap heated handle; I am sure that this adds weight. Not a whole lot, probably, but when you buy an expensive Stihl Light bar to save a few ounces, every ounce means somethings.

With my deal, I got a 20" Stihl Light, a 25" Stihl ES, a 28" Stihl Light and five Stihl chains.

I would love to have a 500i except that if the 462 will do what I want, the lower weight is important. So far, so good. And another cutting session this morning coming up. Yesterday, the first log we bucked was a little punky. Man, the 462 flew through that wood, lol. We were overly impressed. But we got a 'real' log and it was still impressive.

Imo the most impressive thing about the 500i is how light it is and the balance with a 32” light bar.
The 462 is also impressively light. I use mine with a 25” light bar.
The light saws need light bars.

The 462 is 72cc, according to my Stihl dealers website. So, a little more than 2cc difference, but not much. Never ran a 462, but I'm thinking about getting one.

    Congratulations on the saw!

    The 462 is 72cc. Took the place of the 441 (72cc) & 461 (76cc). 462 powerhead is 13.2lbs, 500i is 13.9lbs
With the full wrap handle on your 462 the weight is probably identicle to a 500.

At just over 13 pounds, the MS 462 C-M is the lightest-ever STIHL chainsaw produced in its fuel-powered class. It features an excellent power-to-weight ratio ...
    DISPLACEMENT: 72.2 cc
    FUEL CAPACITY: 24.3 oz
    POWER SOURCE: Gas
    POWERHEAD WEIGHT: 13.2 lbs

My bad, I thought the 462 was 77cc or my aging eyes saw 72 as 77.

I do have a ported 362 and it's a bad boy. And loud. My 462 is hugely loud with the Strait Shot muffler, if you wanna call it a muffler! So, porting might not make it any louder. I can't see how it could be louder than what it is, lol. I wear ear muffs hearing protection.

It is def fun to cut an oak log and the saw is ripping through that hard wood. Of course, a sharp chain is mandatory! It spits nice chips 7-8 feet like a rooster tail.
