Barrel stove builds I should say are on the rise....cheap materials. I can't say they are efficient but they are likely to handle the wood well if two are constructed top/bottom to create a heat sink and slow the heat travel down. Unfortunately I'm not experienced in these at all but if folks are going to make a stove, they should know what they're doing before getting started. I started looking at BBQ builds with barrels much like the fellas do in our Smokehouse section. They use seals well and great welds. But there is that crowd that might try the old propane tank stove. They're becoming more common as camps are the norm in our nearby cities. Tough times will force many to make the most of their options.
People saying you have more wood than you need is like people saying you have too much savings in the bank (after you’ve busted your azz for years and making sacrifices for that to be the case).
That would be a yes. I started locking the gate to my property and keeping it closed when at home so that no one can just drive in and help themselves. The wood piles are not real visible from the main road which is a plus. I also have a game camera set up for anyone who drives in. I have had the camera for years now.
just to add fuel to the fire. I’ve had several reports from home heating delivery drivers that the storage tanks in Ct are dry and have been for quite sometime. If true that doesn’t bode well for us. And I wonder what else they’re not telling us?
I used to have woodpiles visible from the road and easily accessed from the driveway. I have slowly changed that situation so that now my piles are pretty much out of sight and only accessible by atv or tractor.
Great read. I could dive down the political rabbit hole about the US trying to get rid of wood as a heating source. This leads to my point that I don't care what the EPA does, I will always have a wood stove in my house. We know that if there are any power outages or supply issues, a wood stove will always keep a portion of the home warm. Worst case scenario, the kids sleep on the couches in the living room near the wood stove. One question about Ukraine would be how many people not only heat, but do some cooking with a wood stove?
A little mini belt or can fed automated gun that picks out target's like the Navy's Sea wiz gun would be wonderful.
In the event that society breaks down, people like us with wood on hand, will have a resource more valuable than gold. 3 tenets for survival: Shelter Water Food
I get a kick out of people that mock me for heating with wood and all the work and mess and time....But I get the last laugh when they get those big heating bills in the winter . One thing that get's me is that some folks ask if they can have a little wood for a camp fire or the fire place. I found that most of these people want way more than a milk crate or two, don't appreciate all that went into harvesting and processing trees into nice stacked rows, and none of them are ever willing to come over and help css....too cheap to buy a face cord and too ignorant to appreciate the time and love that I put into it all. Now I just tell people I don't have any to spare...This year I had enough on hand for the upcoming winter and if it wasn't for the help of friends this year I wouldn't have any for next year!..this past weekend with help just got next year's wood done and going for more next weekend...Feels good to be getting a couple of years ahead again!!!
And even when those who have all the worlds wealth to buy all the oil they want, when the power goes out for a few days, they're scrambling for gensets and other loud means of keeping going. I spoke with one such person, he seemed a wee bit envious of wood burning but also agreed with my spicy feelings about sticking it HARD to big energy wherever I can and with the gusto I have.
You hit the nail on the head !!! People don’t understand how much hard work it takes to succeed at anything these days.
I could live in the woods without electricity and it wouldn’t bother me. Could you imagine people today having to live like the people in the 1800’s ? LOL
I live a 1/4 mile off the town road that I have frontage on. I do have power and by an 'odd' mistake I have Cable from the utility companies. I love my place and the land I live on....but women don't find it attractive...lol... 'its too quiet', 'theres always chores to do', 'theres too many bugs', 'what do you mean chickens poop?'....and on and on and on. lol
I have to agree with you shack I live in the country on 40 acres, and it took a little convincing to get my wife to live out here and she is a native born and raised here. I am on a well and when you lose power that means no water. I am in the process of correcting that. I am installing a generator.
I am on a well too and also in the process of doing the generator. I have a wonderful trout stream about 100 feet from my door, but the idea of getting a bucket of water to flush the toilet disturbs a lot of people...lol. Lost power one time, so no running water with the well...friend was here and complained about no running water...handed them a bucket and told them to go to the stream and run back with the bucket of water - so there you now have 'running water'...they didn't think that was funny.
