You should give it a go my friend! It’s no speed test. Just a fun 10 minute splitting challenge. Many of the men who have done it don’t even rush.
The idea behind the #letssplitthis challenge is a way to draw attention to men’s mental health because there has been a huge rise in suicide in men. And the “letssplitthis” not only means let’s split this wood, but let’s split whatever is troubling our fellow men. Let’s take the time to talk to them, visit them, help them. The more people who get involved, the more it will spread in the internet and maybe reach men who need to hear what some of the men in the videos have to say. Not only do they split wood, they also talk about struggles they have been through and how they got through them. And many of them talk about how splitting firewood is a good feeling for a man mentally, and I completely agree. I wasn’t the one who made the challenge but I took part and I enjoyed it as well. I believe there is a good cause behind it. I chose to try 100 rounds for a personal contest myself but it’s not about how many you do. I agree that being outside is good for men’s health. That’s a big part of what the challenge highlights. When I watch someone split wood in makes me want to go do it myself, personally. Anyone who chooses to not take place is welcome to move right along. And I don’t mean that in an offensive way. But a lot of the negativity that people display is unnecessary entirely a lot of the time and doesn’t help a thing.
Very well said my friend! I agree entirely. Hand splitting is something that was a normal thing for our ancestors and something that feels natural and relaxing in a very unique way.
Here’s one of the men who did the challenge. It’s more of a “message” than a challenge. They called it the #letssplitthis 10 minute challenge but it’s not about how fast you go or how many you do.
More for my own record here, but I bet I am trailing up on buZZsaw BRAD ... We've put up 17 cord this year, 7 for a friend, 10+ for us, 3 of which I did not split (gift from friend). So that is 14 cord my isocore has plowed through since March of this year. I know I can split a half cord of Ash, cut to 20" or 22" in about 3 hours. I can split a 28" dia round (20"0r 22" tall) in 15 minutes, making the pieces a bit smaller. Everything by hand this year because I am going out to scores, and NOT taking any rounds home to split, mostly because moving the splitter to the wood would be a drag. As to the social value, that's pretty cool. I'm on for that. I might not take my shirt off for the vid (kids will ask their parents why they let aquatic mammals on land), but If I can get Stumpy to record, I'll do it. I'll look more into the Men's mental Health thingy too. We've been domesticated, and my marriage has been teaching me that that is not what's needed of their men! SCA
Very well said my friend. I look forward to seeing you take part! Sounds like you have plenty of experience to put to use for it.
