It didnt rain much, and cleared up after we arrived. It was perfect weather for splitting. I dont care to split in the rain either, but I had help splitting. The big logs are all cut to length. We've brought 4 loads home from those, and probably a couple more when they're all split. Of the original 11 logs, we're down to 4, cut and need to split. Before, sept 23 Yesterday (before we started work. We each knocked off 5 or 6 rounds)
Sirchopsalot and T.Jeff Veal with two of the biggest one site scores of the year 27 cords is a lot of firewood! That would be like 8 years of burning for me in my furnace. I usually burn a couple face cord of odds and ends in my stove before I fire the furnace up each year. What’s your plan with all the wood once you get it home?
Seriously is impressive. When my wife asks how much more wood do we need, I always point out “well the guys on the forum have like 27 cords so about 20 more” lol
Funny. As a number to shoot for, why not? Last year was our first full season heating with wood. I set aside 5.5, we used 6 or a little more (including the half cord of BL that a certain Secret Santa brought us). And, now that the kid is home for the winter, I bet we'll use 7. But we flat out refuse to run the furnace, so we start burning early, and end late...I'd rather burn a small load of SS wood than finance big oil. This year, we started the day after labor day. We use maybe 2 cord before end of year, and 4 after the turn of the year. A three year seasoning for oak, makes for 21 cord needed. I'm kinda thinking we'll keep wood handy for some people in need, and I'm ok to hoard hard now, maybe I'll go easy next season and get the retaining wall built. The current ash score might yield a couple years worth though. There's a lotta darn wood there. Sca
This Ash is our 5th year. So Im cutting it to 20" & 22", and stacking it 3 rows wide and 5.5' tall on a single row of pallets. After that, I'll need to move more wood up to the house to free up more pallet space on a different row. On that row, I'll do a double row of pallets, 5 wood rows on top, with pallets as flat spacers between rows for air flow. Some of the wood at the score was cut to 24" by the tree company. These will get cut in half and go to a friend. He's the guy I keep in wood as a barter for storing some of my wood at his place. This Ash will be working on his 3rd year supply. Sca
I split a couple big rounds (29") yesterday beofe work, and Stumpy and I went back for a few more today, and hauled just under half a cord out today. Pic of the wood stack yesterday. More pics tomrrow. We're up to 2.5 maybe 3 cord outta there to date. Sca
After 2 hours sleep today, Stumpy and I headed to the Ash score. I've not split a half cord (measured anyway) in one day. The large diameter log deck is done and gone. I think it came to 2 cord. Just scraps and remains left to toss in the woods. Tomorrow we'll stack at home, and then hit up the wood up the behind/hill from todays finish.
Stumpy and I hit it again today. We got less than a full trailer load, I just didn't have the pepper today. But we cleared a lot of rounds out. this is our 7th load, 2 of which were short loads, figure we've pulled 3 cord out. I'm resting in tomorrow, maybe with a little stacking action, but not much more than that. Happy Sabbath. SCA
Snoozed this afternoon, stacked yesterday's trailer load. The top middle is not done, just tossed up. Time for werk. Liking 3 rows of 20" logs. The row is 6' tall, requires standing on a split to see and finish the top.
That woodpile looks like a locomotive I’m digging the one split sticking out as a coffee cup holder too.
Deffinitely train esque. I don't know why I didn't think of using a sliver to hold coffee till now. I should start a thread about nifty creative things to do with a stack. If I make another holzen, im going to build a window in a couple sides, and put a solar light in each ( and maybe some trailcams). Maybe a red light on top. Sca
