This is coming up at a local auction. Supposedly it was owned by a hydroplane mechanic…the other tools in the auction look clean and well cared for. I won’t be able to test compression or running condition.

Bidding is up to $35, and there’s one day left. I’ve read that these are on the heavy side…anyone else have any thoughts on this old girl, including what it’s worth (assuming it only needs a little work)?

I’d use it for basic firewooding…not taking down many trees. Thank you!

They are relatively heavy and slow, but if it starts & runs good, it would probably cut a lot of wood for you. I personally wouldn’t give more than $150 for one of them, but I’m sure others would disagree.

The Supers were great saws and I like them much better than the standard 038AV or the "Farm Boss" version.

(relatively) Heavy, but powerful and reliable. Slow, maybe compared to something from the last 5-10 years. Go over it with a screwdriver once in awhile.

If you get it for under $100, I'd say it's a fantastic deal.

I'd agree with MasterMech and others. The saw is fine for what it is. A good quality saw. If it's not beat beyond use and you care for it you will most likely get several more decades out of it. Like said it's heavier than a modern saw of similar size and power. But we're not talking like 10 pounds were just talking a few pounds. For firewood cutting a few hours here and there it won't make a big difference like if you were logging all day with a saw.

Looks to be in nice condition for the age. They are a little heavy, but built like a tank.

Thank you for the input. I was wrong…there is a week left of bidding and now it’s up to $85. Given how clean the rest of this guy’s tools were, I’d imagine it’s in decent shape. I think my high bid might be $150…even if I’ve never met the guy I trust the pedigree more than most CL or FBM saws.

(I somehow screwed up posting pics, so this is the actual third pic I meant to post.)

I just got through working on one. I think your 150-dollar bid is a great price if you get it. Probably worth a little more than that.

Ive never run one, but have heard good things about them (from Stihl owners of course). Stihl made three versions...038 (62cc) 038 super (67cc), 038 Magnum and magnum 2 (72cc).

Looks to be in good shape for a 30 year old saw. Ive seen them for over $300 on CL/FBM and not as good of condition as that one. Tough when you cant try it before buying. Judging by the paint wear on the bar on both sides the guy took good care of it. That bar appears to be the original.
Id go up to $200. What is the buyers premium?

15% premium. 21 more hours and it’s still at $85…

I wouldn't be afraid to spend 200-225 on that example, being it's a Super and looks to be in excellent condition. It'll be a great firewood bucking saw.

I am! I’m just going to wait until the last 20 min of the auction. No sense in giving people a lot of time to reconsider their own high bid. It kinda sucks knowing that there are at least two others watching it and willing to bid $85….it’ll probably go a whole lot higher.

More or less the same on ebay. I used to use a bidding agent that put my max bid right at the end of the auction. Got some great deals that way.
A stihl MS400 is the current comparable saw at 67cc $1000 saw new. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

I bought an 038mag a few years ago that was disassembled and in a box. New piston and a few smalls and it sold for $450 I believe. It was pretty clean though. Heavy as a tank was as slow as one.
