A couple weeks ago we had our early antlerless deer season (2 days, private land only)

It was the first time I have ever hunted this early, heatstroke and malaria are not things I usually associate with deer season. But i got bored sitting and started walking, my dad had his property logged off 2 years ago this winter and now we have TOH EVERYWHERE.

I gave up hunting and hit the woods with 3 gallons of Roundup, and I am sure I didn't get them all, a few bigger ones were 8-10' tall, most 3-4'. Reading up on it I shouldn't cut or it will come back with vengeance.

This is 25-30 acres of prime Maple/ Beech hardwoods, and we have a sugarbush on part of it, so we really don't want it taking over.

Anyone have any suggestions for removal?

What I have found is ; girdle away the bark at the base of the tree, than brush on your choice of tree poison. It' is a time killer doing it this way but it worked for me.
I used brushtox and it worked great. It needs to be done in July/august from what I have read and is when I did mine last summer.
There isn't any easy way to deal with a large plot that I'm aware of.
Everything I have read stated they need to be hit individually.. uggg
ROundup won't touch them, it barely dents ivy. Maybe if you injected the roundup into the tree it might work?

Going to wage war on TOH myself, next year.
I did read from PSU extension to spray glyphosate on young saplings from top down. Trees 3-6" diameter, spray at base and 6"up. Large trees they say to make notches around the tree, leaving space between notches. Pour glyphosate into the notches. All this needs to be done in july/august.
If you just go cut a TOH, it sends out runners everywhere. These methods are suppose to kill the entire tree and root system.

For bigger trees cut them down and paint the stump with undiluted glyphosate. You can also use tricoplyr found in otc brush killer.
Foliar applications of diluted glyphosate will take several applications to small trees.
6-8 ozs/gal of glyphosate on English Ivy in the spring when new leaves are emerging will wipe it out guaranteed.

Get a bunch of copper nails and drive them into the trees

I am stump-treating invasives. Not sure of the exact mix (got it through a local company that does this commercially). Near full strength, but dabbed onto the fresh-cut stump. Most of what I’m doing I cut with loppers, but some sawn.

They recommended a different applicator, but this was the best I could source. Works fine, with no messy drips. We wear gloves, I cut and she dabs.

Chemical has a blue dye, makes it obvious what has been done. I use the dye when spraying glyphosate on invasives, too.

I mix up 2-4-D and commercial strength Glyphosate (Roundup Ultra Max) in equal parts and girdle the tree and brush it on. Works every time.

Is that tree of heaven or autumn olive? That stuff has spread all over MI and grows extremely fast. Difficult to get rid of and if you just cut it, it will grow back super fast. Spray or pull out, get all the roots.

I’m interested to see what the Spotted Lantern fly does to the local Tree of Heaven population. Tree of Heaven is its preferred food. Maybe the bug can decimate the tree. It will be really bad if the bug munching on the trees spur growth and regeneration.

The bug is in my neighborhood now. I saw (and squashed) on in my yard a few weeks ago. Al of the photos that I’ve seen of swarms look like they are on Tree of Heaven.

    Spotted Lanternfly Alert

I have one big TOH in my back yard and several smaller growing around it. I would like to not have to mess with the big one as it is a decent shade tree in that spot of the yard. But I don't want any more popping up. Which I do have, and need to take care of...

I'll have to take some pics. I have seen our tree of heaven just covered by 1000s of lanterflies. You can stand there and sounds like its raining from them munching on the trees. Its disgusting.

Definitely TOH, at first glance I thought it was sumac.

We do pretty good keeping autumn olive under control on the tree lines- have been for years.

What I do besides using my mlx of commercial roundup and 24D My tractors are large enough that a chain on the drawbar is usually sufficient enough to yank them out, roots and all.

Run em over with the lawnmower. Seems to be one of the best methods I’ve found. Keep them cut down there’s no leaves to allow growth.
I thought maybe fire over the root system would have an effect. Nope. Spring right up out of the ashes. Bastiges

You folks be very careful using Round up.This stuffs has suits against it for causing cancer. Also many of these other chemical deterrents have now been found to cause Parkinson's. If this tree is the same as Aliantus which grows fast just cut as firewood. It burns well and dries fast.
