Yeah there really isnt a good route that way. The route id go i take a country road off 17 in Durham near where the fair is. Did some work in Higganum and its a nice ride through farm/wooded country.
rainking63 I don’t know if you’re aware of it or not, but there’s a famous tree at the library in your town. Back in May I actually stopped by to see it in person. In 1995 it was featured in the New York Times. Chestnut Trees Find a Friend (Published 1995) It’s heavily diseased and covered with cankers, the root system constantly sending up new shoots, but it’s clinging to life.
Wanted to give us CT hoarders some hope/inspiration. This old black birch is located in Mohegan Park in Norwich. It’s right near the parking lot across from the pond. It’s a busy area in the summer and right near the road. I figured it has escaped being cut down many many times. I emailed Tom Wessels, the guy who does “forest forensics” on YouTube. He agreed that it looked like it was over 200 years old. I’m sure there are older trees in CT (I’ve seen older birch than this one in the same park), but this one has surely escaped death countless times.
Interesting Steve. I would have never guessed that a black birch based on the pics. What was the DBH?
Ya beat me to it, huh??? Headed out there tomorrow but taking 91 to 66 as Dyrham fair os on and a nightmare to get through there.
That’s what happens to most, maybe all, of the roadside wood unless we get to it first. Sometimes dumped elsewhere but eventually the tub grinder comes and chops it up. Then we the tax payers pay to have it dumped at the bio energy plant. Then we get to pay for the energy it produced. Should be a lucrative business.
