I left it alone, it wandered off somewhere when I came back about an hour later. I don't mind it nesting in that stack, except that is my stack for this winter. So left the tarp off over night, hoping it will decide to make a nest somewhere else so I don't evict it in the middle of winter.
Are those things mean? I saw one that was road kill a couple of years ago in Denver. Only one I've ever seen. I don't think they are common around here.
Not really. Ive picked them up by the tail and they growl. Tried to get it to play dead. Rather slow moving. Common sight to see dead ones on the road. We get them in the yard foraging.
One early morning last year I was walking to my treestand. It was dark and I wasn't using a flashlight. I started walking up a bank and heard this deep growling. I was like what the hell is that. So I did 2 things. I pulled out my knife and got my flashlight out. I was shining the light all around and kept hearing this growling, but I didn't see anything. But I should of, because the sound was very close. I kept hearing it and pinpointed where it was coming from. About 5 feet in front of me in a groundhog hole was a ole' possum. All I could see was a little of his face. I started laughing. He scared the hell out of me. I thought it was sasquatch or the predator!
It is a funny story, I'm sure it would of scared the chit out of me as well. That little fellar didn't growl much. It looked like a baby to me. But I saw no sign of momma anywhere and it looked like a nest for one. Next door neighbor recently started to work for a pest control company. In the 18 years I've been here I've never had "critter" issues. This past year I had to chase a momma coon and her babies out of the porch roof Now I find that guy in my stack. I can't prove either way if it's a catch and release, I guess it's a coincident? I have woods in my back 40 so they could have been pushed out of the woods I guess..
Had one of these in my woodpile last week when is was 90F. He got away before I could get a pic. Today this one was in the road in front of our house sunning himself and digesting a mouse or two. Eastern Fox snake. This one was almost 4 feet long. The one in the woodpile was considerably shorter. I carried this guy to the ditch before a car could smuck him,,,,
Does this count? Young bull moose came strolling through today. He is a critter… And there are stacks in the pics… He’s eating my baby Aspen trees in the last pic. What a jerk Sorry for the crappy pics. I keep my distance from these guys when they come around. Neighbor’s Pit Bull got squished by one last fall.
I've never seen one in person. Weird there was one in Denver, wonder if someone let a pet loose? I've never seen a moose in person either though...
I agree. It was weird to see a possum in person. I was walking across the street with a friend in North Denver. My friend was born and raised in Texas. The possum was dead in the crosswalk. He knew right away what it was. He said he’s seen a thousand of them back home. Thing was ugly. The moose on the other hand are a pretty common occurrence here. Gotta be careful with the pups and kids. They can be a little grouchy.
Thats cool. Never have seen one in person and would hate to find it "in my stacks" Thanks for sharing. Few years back one crossed the road just up from us. Rare sighting in CT. Made the evening news. Wish i had seen it...at a safe distance.
Not in a stack, but under some metal roofing for top covers. Picked one up and there he/she was. I dont know how to tell the gender of a garter snake. No plumbing to check for! Moving some splits and this wood spider was hiding.
Snakes don’t bother me a bit. But how can you handle that spider like that? That thing could kill you instantly!!
I killed a whiteface hornet chewing on a 2x4 on my stack the other day. They mix the wood fibers with their saliva to make the "paper" for nest building. Was that nest live when you took the pic? I risked my life for the good of the FHC. Actually my cojones are bigger than my brain. Its a non poisonous spider (i think). Anyhow im still here and feel fine! Ive picked them up many times in the past. Certain spiders im cautious with.
