    Sawed this log up with the mill the other day, the customer that brought it over called it cherry.
    I don't think it's cherry, but I didn't argue about it..... if he wants it to be cherry so be it.....
    Smells a little poopy like cottonwood, or possibly maple..... maybe...or possibly an elm, (but I didn't try to split it).
    All the cherry I've seen around here has the scaly bark.
    We'uz located on the Missouri Arkansas border about midway east and west.

    Growth rings match elm, as does your description of the smell. The little sucker limbs evidenced in the boards fits too. I’ll buy the elm verdict.

    Elm is one of the most common non oak trees around here, so that sounds pretty plausible, though the bit of elm I've milled has been more pinkish red in the heartwood.....
