After taking my 4 legged fur friend Marshall and the lady to do our usual weekend feeding the dairy cows, we headed back to get my truck for a good load of just about the finest stuff you can get around here in the PNW. All free and likely will be the chunky monkeys during a cold spell. 20220828_104221.jpg Have a good Sunday!

Black locust! The only kind of stuff that really gives it some good competition is Arbutus Menziesii or Pacific Madrona up in these parts. Dogwood might as well.

    Really??
Some BL that BRAD didn't snag before you grabbed it. Amazing!!

Good little score. I actually don't mind the small chunks like that; with the exception of stacking, they are good burning.

What I've done with those short fat rounds, instead of splitting them and trying to get them put up like the rest of the firewood, is just leave them as they are and fit them in the stack somehow. Sometimes as they dry/season they crack and split into pieces all by themselves. If not, when they are dry down the road, they're pretty easy to bust up with a maul or even a foot. No sense fighting what nature might do for ya.

I’ve got a couple of rows that are on pallets.
I stacked 16s on each side and filled the middle with the chunks as I went.
I also have a tote with some but they tend to fall out the holes in the cage.

No kidding and it splits so well too. I really only split a few to just hoist them in the truck and plan to just get a stack going of some hawthorn and some other wood I have no idea what in a pallet bin. I started a stack where we will be living and I'll share more of that down the line. Basically just getting started at the new place, no wood stove YET but come hell or high water I'll have at least a 3 year plan in no time...

Been looking for those IBC totes for an emergency water supply around us. The totes are expensive....$100 plus and I'm looking for food related items being used in them prior.

I love em, Brad would have fun around here. The wood cutting starts in late winter and keeps going for awhile until the rains come, off and on there. Thing is our wood isn't as BTU loaded as this is so when I get BL, I'm on it. Anyone who knows it will be too so it's grab it when you know it's down. Gonna save this little bundle for some wind blowin' snowy night.

Thank you! That's Bea in the corner. I love the dog but Doh. Stories. :picard::hair:o_O
Yep we have 90s today, tomorrow and next day. High 80s for a bit. Got the dry wood that was on the property on the stack yesterday. Other source from an estate sale is piled up next to it too, some Maple and Douglas. I took that picture while stacking too so its much more filled in than shown. What's even more of a bonus is the amount of Western Red cedar that was buried in the back of this overhang of the shop stacked in rounds. Having been there for at least 8-10 years it was bone dry. Even some yellow cedar was in this as well. Shame it was great looking stuff but I wonder if it was cut offs from a mill doing the lumber and the rounds had a few too many knots. I took the double ended axe to it and tink, tink, tinked some kindling off, hah! Splendid.

We have a little bit of a collected history from this place from the neighbors and the owner of the property who has recently passed about the owner who was fighting cancer then. A longer story than I'll drum up here but overall it gets more interesting finding the "artifacts" from before.

Good to see you got some BL. It is the best cold time firewood. Can't get Madrone where I live, but a little BL goes a long way for the 2-3 weeks of cold snap.

Someone’s giving away some BL in Lynnwood right now. You anywhere close to that?

I'm in Buckley currently but that's soon to be in Enumclaw. Little bit more than I'd wanna drive unless we have business out there. Thanks for the heads up though! Glad more of you WA fellows are here. Some have come and gone.

This is exactly I take these little grabs. They aren't much but holy moly BL will work when we get those cold snaps. I sure wished I was burning during the snow last year then it froze for days and then snowed again. The place we live in now is not what I call optimal at all. The windows are single pane, they leak like your grandma's faucet. Some are permanently shut. I'm over than done with the landlord. New place is what we're looking forward to. It'll be awhile until we burn but I've got so much wood out at the new spot from all the deadfall branches, we'll be burning for months outside anyway.

They burn the best! I had some silver maple aways back that got knotted from the sprouts when they get pruned so that was the longest burning stuff I had that were all ugly and never gave the splitter a break.
