Hey everyone, I’m cutting a lot more wood now with the Buck Stove insert we had installed last fall and the Fire Chief furnace. The pole barn in the pics is located at our family get away property. The layout is as follows: the barn door pictured faces West. The roofed overhang faces north. The open side faces south. Which side would be optimum for storage/drying? The south side would be exposed to rain/snow (but would be covered with rubber billboard material in the winter. This side would get the most sun and wind. The wood would be stored above the ground on pallets. The north side would be covered with the roof but would not get the sun and there is the possibility of mildew growth due to the north orientation. I wanted to get everyone’s recommendation. ‘Thanks.
I would favor the sunny windy side for seasoning, but sheltered wood in harsh Winters sure is nice. Busting frozen splits out of melted and frozen snow drifts is not fun.
The north side would be ok if your on the three year plan. Maybe put some air spaces between the rows. The overhang is nice in that you never have to worry about a tarp or other cover blowing off.
Wind is your friend for drying firewood. I would not stack wood next to the building because it cuts down on the air circulation. Are there eave troughs on the barn? That is another big consideration.
