Stopped at the gas station the other day and saw this... These were being sold for $6.99!!!! The label claimed to be .75 to 1 cubic feet of firewood. Yea, don't think so. I could fit 2 of these into one of my bundles, and I sell .75 cubic foot bundles. Its unfortunate because I've tried reaching out to this gas station to sell, and this guy is out of a big city about an hour away. I don't want to bash on the guy too bad but this is almost fraud. Not sure what to do about it.
That'll make for some very expensive smores. They are awfully small bundles but whatcha gonna do on vacation? Maybe "gas buddy" will come out with bundle buddy.
You could point out to the store owner that he is guilty of something akin to fraud because of what he is selling. In the eyes of the law, he might be legally liable. False advertising also comes to mind. As for the bundler guy, you could call him or write him a letter and let him know he could get in big trouble for ripping people off in a dishonest way. I doubt he's clueless, he's probably just a crook. As long as the stores buy it, he figures he's good to go. The store owner is complicit in my mind.
I'd actually measure it out to cover your butt before you say anything. 3/4 of a cubic foot isn't much.
Buyer beware ! on the flip side heck of a lot profit there ($1188 apx. per 128cf @ $6.99/.75cf) so if the supplier is getting a third apx $396/cord less costs of course.
that is a rip off. Unless the logs are 24" no way thats .75 cubic ft. I see crappy bundles all the time around here. Oddball lengths, hastily assembled. Softwoods in the mix too. My bundles are .60 cf... 8x8 x16" and tightly packed with 6-7 splits. A delivery from this week.
You can definitely speak with the store owner and let them know that looks short of .75 cubic feet. Also a company or individual cannot claim a range on their packaging/labeling. Imagine if a box of cereal listed a range of quantity on the packaging. Typically in most states a consumer package is required to have a declaration of identity ( who is responsible/who manufactured the product and a physical address) this is going to be the biggest infraction found on most bundled firewood because of how low the barrier to entry to making bundles is. There are countless people who want a side hustle and don't bother to do one iota of research on what is required to sell commercial packages to the public at an establishment. also a declaration of quantity, this appears to be your problem, the quantity is below what the stated quantity. You could also call your state weights and measures, they also do the gas pumps and might be able to stop by when testing gas stations. You could measure it yourself but it is a heck of a lot more involved to do it correctly. It involves using ratchet straps on the bundles to get them tight together, without the wrap and the use of graph paper to measure the area of the bundle ends which is outlined in handbook 133 published by the national institute of standards and technology. Also are all of the bundles this short? There is allowable variations that are considered acceptable. This is probably a lot more that you ever cared to know but i would call W&M and tell them you think it is short and that they are making a range of quantity on their label and see where it goes.
Every state has a department of weights and measures. You could give them a call. If any one of those bundles doesn't measure out to .75 cu ft, there are legal penalties.
I stopped by a local Quickie Mart the other day to pump Ethyl , when I was coming out after paying I noticed that they had mesh bags of wood. The bags were half full at most , only 4 or 5 pieces in each one. I did not see a selling price. I would guess in the 5-6 dollar range .
At these prices for 4 sticks of wood, maybe I should just sell bundles and buy dino juice to burn for heat. Might be further ahead in the end. Jeez!
People buy bundled firewood for their camp fires ant local RV parks and they have no idea of the actual quantity and probably don't care anyway Do the same deal around here as well. The people that buy them have no intention of burning it for heat. The guy who takes my wood does the same thing. Wraps it in shrink wrap and sells it to campers.
