Hi All, I was clearing some fence row in the back yard and came upon this little tree. I have no idea what it is, but it if it worth letting grow into cuttable wood I'd like to let it grow - if not I'll put it in the firepit pile and move a pecan into it's spot. Any idea if this is worth letting grow?
I don't know much, but I would hazard Hackberry for $5. I say that by the looks, but others look similar, such as sugarberry. But, the leaves have been heavily chewed on, and, here in NE Texas, lots of moths and stuff eat the Hackberry trees and they ALWAYS look that way. They are considered trash trees here, because the die rather quickly (20-30 years), are weak limbed(ice storms and high winds wreak havoc) and they aren't as pretty as most. They do grow rather quickly though.
Well I got a chuckle out it being a hackberry! My Mother planted one of those at the old home place up north about 50 years ago, and I walked right by it just a couple of months ago... It's still alive, not very pretty, and probably 60-70 feet shorter than the sycamores my Dad planted a few years earlier. Guess I should have paid more attention... If that is the case, looks like I'll be moving a pecan sapling, or maybe put an apple in there to replace my rust prone Fuji that is coming down in the fall. Thanks!
